Iran and Nuclear Capability
Dec 4, 2012

As we all know, the Middle East has become the central location of conflict for years now. Iran, in particular, has caused some disturbance because of their suspicious "peaceful" nuclear program. Unfortunately, the "peaceful" aspect seems like false advertisement.

So what does this program entail?

Well, the program has been relying on the fact that Iran has been enriching uranium for months now. This enrichment, once reaching 20% (which is projected to happen around spring or early summer), could be sufficient enough to be used in creating nuclear weapons. This would be traumatic. It would most likely lead Iran into sharing these weapons with terrorist groups such as Hezbollah, which would put a wave of danger throughout the Middle East.

However, it would also affect us.

American military action may not be ideal for this situation, but it's definitely a possibility. Yet going to war with Iran could also have dangerous consequences, and could backfire on us and result in an angrier and more aggressive Iran.

The biggest problem with this is that if they become upset with us, they could end up closing the Strait of Hormuz. This is where about 20% of the world's oil passes through, so closing it would be fatal.

So now I ask, what other options would we have in order to prevent Iran from aquiring nuclear capability, but also avoiding military force against them (atleast for now)? Could we convince them to stop with certain incentives? Give them an ultimatum?
