Attract Youth to Technology
Dec 1, 2012
|
|
Hi there I4G members,
I have come up with a series of thoughts in regards connecting with the very young kids in my
community with any kind of technology, so they later can consider it it as maybe one of their career
choices. Kids these days are currently aware of technology , with the daily use of games and cell
phones, but they don't really understand how it works, don't they?
I think that by creating some sort of project that can be started within the school of a respective
community , we can achieve that very young kids to develop a deep interest in technology.
Does anyone here have any experience on attracting a young community of kids towards technology?

Hi Delkys,
Good question! There are some Innovate for Good members you can connect with, who are working in
different regions of the globe on this issue. There's a lot of work that can be done on this topic
and you can share your experiences.
Tech 4 Kids is one such program: https://www.innovate4good.org/community/ideas/view/?id=91
That is being developed by Adrian: https://www.innovate4good.org/profile/Bampe
and Genevieve has done something similar: https://www.innovate4good.org/profile/glesperance
as well as Nour: https://www.innovate4good.org/profile/nourhansayed

@Delkys, That is an awesome one! Yes I can help you with that, I actually tried several things and
it somehow depends on the base knowledge for the kids.
I mean my experience was with kids around 8-12, which I think is a really good stage to plant that
spirit of technology :-) !
I will post a few things that might help.

Thanks guys!
I am very happy that other I4G members are working on this as well!
I am very eager to start developing something that can help so many people at once!
I would definitely try to aim to youngsters 8-12, they are in a very susceptible age, a factor that
is very important for us , so we can mold their interests at an early stage, that being something
crucial to this project.
I
Any resources on this would be very much appreciated!

In order for people to learn about things, they need to experience them, especially in their full
form. It sickens me to see schools get all new, fancy computer labs only to waste them by blocking
access to things and only allowing students to use learning applications and research within school
databases. Students need to be allowed to explore the vast and informative world that is technology
and the Internet. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that you can start with communities with greater access to technologies and work outward
from there, into communities that have less access. Each community always has those interested in
technology; it's a matter of really a matter of searching them out of the community. Maybe even
using surveys or social media to find out who is most interested, first. Then creating a network or
community to attract more youth.

Hi!
From a third-world perspective, I guess it'll be great too to help children from rather depressed
areas to gain access to technology.
We've done this before by providing a couple of units to a public elementary school in a slum area.
Coming from our beneficiary, the access to the hardware is already a much appreciated opportunity.
As this will give them the venue to allow the children to learn even the basics (like operating
office suites); which in the long run can already count as a credential.
In that light, the best way to help children (based on my experience) to appreciate technology is by
allowing them to understand what that particular knowledge could provide for them in the long run.

You have several Microsoft resources for kids. For example, they can learn coding with Kodu. With
nearly one-half million downloads since its release and more than 16,000 student-made games
currently available for download, Kodu has proven an effective way to teach programming to young
people.
You have more Microsoft resources for education in the "Microsoft Partners in Learning Network"

I love your idea.
Kids should be more involved in the technology progress. I think that in the field of technology
there are invented many things that make us constantly more stupid and using less creativity.
Children should get involved into this information revolution.
