Urban Legends from Around the World
Oct 29, 2010

According to wikipedia, an urban legend is:
An urban legend, urban myth, urban tale, or contemporary legend, is a form of modern folklore consisting of apocryphal stories believed by their tellers to be true. As with all folklore and mythology, the designation suggests nothing about the story's truth or falsehood, but merely that it is in circulation, exhibits variation over time, and carries some significance that motivates the community in preserving and propagating it.
Despite its name, an urban legend does not necessarily originate in an urban area. Rather, the term is used to differentiate modern legend from traditional folklore in pre-industrial times. For this reason, sociologists and folklorists prefer the term contemporary legend.
Urban legends are sometimes repeated in news stories and, in recent years, distributed by e-mail. People frequently allege that such tales happened to a "friend of a friend" -- so often, in fact, that "friend of a friend," has become a commonly used term when recounting this type of story.

What are some urban legends that are commonly told in your communities, among your friends and/or family?

I want to propose that we develop a project for creating a collection of the legends for children of 40th century. That means a collection for children of 40 century. For example, I could do a collection for children in Delhi 2000 years later.

There are many stories of big cats roaming the countryside where I grew up - in the East of England. Many people have claimed to see animals similar to black panthers, although I have never seen them myself many of the witness statements are intriguing to say the least!

The Caiptal city of west Borneo Indonesia called 'Pontianak" , derived from the word "Kuntilanak".
kuntilanak is the word malay used to describe a ghost ,who usually appears as a woman in white dress and long hair covered the face ,fly around making squeking voices ........
in Malaysia ,our closest neighbour ,in their languange (malay) they actually use the word "Pontianak" to the describe the ghost .........
i spent some years living in the city that named after a type of ghost , but never seen any ........

cheers,
aseng

Hi Aseng Tan! I was born in Pontianak and lived there for about 11 years and I absolutely know about that myth: Pontianak, refers to the word "Kuntilanak", a woman-ghost with squeaking voices.

But yes, I never seen any too smile
