Ogallala aquifer loses 13 trillion gallons of water to ranchers and farmers for factory and feedlots
everyday.
Water is used to produce beef and not for cereal for our consumption.
America West used to be the GRAIN BELT of the world.Bread basket of the world. The last 50 years has
seen extensive pumping of the aquifer by ranchers and feedlot farmers have had deliberate demerits
for food .
The demands for irrigated water for ranching has outstripped the demand for water for food
farming.
Most of the land in the west is parched and unable to grow food has limited the acreage of land
for food production.
The food prices in the USA are complimented by the changing weather patterns, legislation and the
greedy agri-business.
2007 was the hottest in the US history.Water bodies dried up and there were water controls and bans
for home consumption only. There were extensive pumping of water. The costs of producing food had
doubled overnight last year
Converting corn into bio fuels was an act of congress. There were lots of subsidies for corn
farmers.Corn farmers were getting more money producing corn for fuel and for feed lots than food
production
"United states will lose much,if not all,of its grain surplus. It will lose its ability to provide
security for its people"
Ed Ayers, World Watch
FACTS ABOUT LAND IN WEST OF USA
70 % of land in the west is used for grazing
livestock
2/3 of land in Montana,Wyoming,Colorado,N.Mexico,Nevada,,Utah and Idaho is used for range land.
cattle sheep and other livestock graze roughly 525miilion acres .
Lastly, livestock is fed with grains and soybeans...........................People in the world go
without any food.

I think that the fact that people are talking about the world food crisis as a threatto global
security is only part of the issue. Worldwide poverty, of which food security is a major issue, is
one of the many causes of less-stable governments and less stable societies. No matter how much
people argue, the basic necessities must be present, otherwise conflict is always going to be an
issue. Not so much conflict between sovereign states, but civil conflict and strife will become more
common, and will increasingly become the norm if the world food crisis isn't dealt with. We've
already seen riots within Haiti, which brought down a government. It is only a matter of time until
people are going to war over food and precious resources such as water. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Jasper,
You have put on the table the inner and the core of the food price crises. What kind of solution do
you have?

I think it's obiously the fact that it has became close to the limitation of the earth itself to
feed human beings. According to the notion of ecological footprint, if people all of the globe live
as American do, the surface of the earth must become 5 times larger, and also people live as
japanese do, then 2~3 times.
Then, I'm intereted in agricultures in the cities, urban area. For instance, agriculture developed
in skyscrapers and underground
It can cut the cost of conveyance and farmland. And more advanced information network will help to
urge more smooth trade of foods. Not only discussing world's economics and security, but also to
develop new technorogy are important way to think these issues, I think.

The quest for ethanol from corn has incresed in recent times especially in developed countries such
as the nited States of America. This isn't feasible in countries in our part of the world-africa,but
it seems food shortageand hike in food prices is quite persistent in Africa. As such, should our
predicament be attributed to the new search for biomass fuels?NO!I still believe Africa needs a
reincarnation of Good leaders that will take into cognisance Human Capital Development. At a time, the
chief export from Nigeria was Cocoa, not only Nigeria but other West african countries too, nowadays
their has been shift to other resources and those that are in this food business, are also not
encouraged.Information to farmers are not available for free, and when they are, complete informations
a re not given by those that are to inform them. And in this Africa that I was born, most people that
produce food crops are Men and Women that stay in the rural areas, consequently, access to information
becomes difficult. If 100billion dollars of aids is sent around the world, according to the world
bank, and just 20% of it reaches these disenfranchised farmers, then there will be much food in our
basket, especially in Africa here where we have the most fertile land.In Africa, there is so much
prospects, but so much complex problems.Maybe a problem with each person instinct, guide and
vision.Postive Vision,Positive Africa .

Where does the continent of Africa stand regarding this increment of food? Farmers should be
encouraged to produce more food for global consumption. While we acknowledged global warming around
the corner

The continent of Africa is varied from the dry and cold North Africa,to the vast hot and dry Sahara
desert, to the Sahel region,to the tropical forests, savannah and the dry mountains of Southern
Africa.
We need to understand that geography, topography and rainfall patterns determine the extent of
agricultural patterns.
Only a third of Africa produces food to feed the entire continent.
90% of African women engage in food production, processing and finding fuel.
Men market the produce at both the subsistence and commercial levels to sustain the family.
Every African country is different in terms of edaphic, botanic and temperature regimes.
Every African country is suited to specific solutions.
To best approach the need to produce QUALITY food in Africa needs LOCAL solutions

All the social, political and economic upheavals for the past year have shown us lessons.
we need to re-examine all issues of storage and food policies ,if our countries are to stay at
top.We need to look at availability of food, the costs of producing food and the costs of preparing
the food.
Food shortages have created temporary
chaos in both urban and rural settings.
Food shortages have increased rural to urban migration in different cities and accelerated urban
population densities.
Food shortages are a catalyst to an ongoing resentment in a social setting, but only ignites the fire
to burn.
The onset of increasing population in urban dwellers have created tensions of the scarce
food, increasing the prices, and short term wars.

Critical Thinking on Food Scarcity

http://businessandmedia.org/articles/2008/20081230165231.aspx
If you say demand is the problem, then is population control the solution? Is telling humanity to
stop being human the better solution? Oh, we humans are such parasites to this lovely planet...if
only we would stop being human and creating families.
Is it biofuels causing the problem? Brazil's president doesn't seem to think so.

Or is it the government subsidies?

I believe that increasingly high food prices could threaten not only global security, but also
global stability. This is a serious issue. So, a couple of points.
Food prices are high where demand is high.
Given a flawless distribution system, there is enough food to feed everyone.
Too many countries are not sustainable; the people of those countries couldn't survive without
imports.
So in order to make food prices go down, we would have to lower demand or increase supply.
Increasing supply is preferable.
What countries really need to focus on is making themselves self-sufficient. This would not only
help them feed themselves, but would also help to stabilise the economy. So, government initiatives
for farming, increase farmers, and farms.
Everyone should probably stop smoking, and drinking so much tea and coffee. ouch. But these crops
take up valuable food crop space, mostly in under-developed countries. We have to use fertile land
more effectively.
Employing these simple measures should produce more food.
There may come a point when the world will strain to support all of us, but we are not there yet.

we feel it everyday , it's a big risk in the way , it's looking like the world will destroy itself
but by our hand
what the people will do if they can't find food or the food prices are high for someone .
that what will happen :
-they will kill each other.
-they will destroy everything in the world.
-governments will fall.
-Ethics will gone faraway.
and lot of things..........

The quest to feed the nation has been burdened by Agribusiness investment companies and a few
subsistence farmers on the margins. Agribusiness firms are only interested in profit motive and
operate on large economies of scale.Rural farmers only have a few acres for food production and
little surplus for sale. The demand for food all over the world had trippled and the supply has
lagged behind. The costs of producing food in the world has doubled since last year.We must remind
ourselves, farmers in the Midwest of USA were benefitting from increased price of soy beans feed to
animals and energy ,than to provide a dying or a hungry world Different parts of the world have
witnessed the rise in food prices, decreases in quantity and quality has been compromised.Global
citizens are stressed about other factors that impede the production and slow the SUPPLY of food. We
need to address the issue FOOD SECURITY AND STORAGE.
Food security is at the main helm of Global warming.FOOD QUALITY AND AVAILABILITY should be at the
center of National Security deliberations and poverty
