Food Price Rises Threathen Global Security?
May 30, 2008
|
|
According to TIME magazine, escalating food prices is being added "to the list of items that
could seriously threaten world peace." Furthermore, U.N. Secretary-General calls rising food
prices a 'Global Crisis'
Rocketing food prices have already sparked riots in numerous countries recently. From Mexico to
Pakistan, protests have turned violent. Food prices will remain high over the next decade as the
OECD and the UN's FAO food agency reports.
What does this mean for global security and for the millions who already live in poverty?

I believe the rising food price is of a global concern and apart from riots, everyone is pretty much
affected by this issue.
In malaysia, where everything counts (as in every sen), it is hard not to feel the brute of this
high cost of food because if you are prone to eating out with your friends, you might consider
buying foodstuffs and cooking your own food and if you have a large family to feed, you might need
to start your own organic gardening so as to reduce the weekly expenses.
Rice as a food commodity and a staple food in Asia is greatly affected and that is why people are
finding it hard to cope, some are resulting to eating less or finding other food subsititutes....

[/b]We need to start moving ahead of just analyzing this threat to injecting ideas to a lasting
solution.we cannot treat as trivial the global drift from subsistent agriculture and food crop
management. There has been so much wastage in the past that needs to be corrected.Money is failing
especially in deveoping nation.Let us do our part towards good agricultural extension.

well, personally, I believe, the global crisis is pretty much of the effect of te
high cost of crude oil and the dropping value of the US dollars. I will suggest that the developing
countries should turn towards educating their people on good agricultural practices and to subsidize
the cost of producing locally grown produce in their respective countries.
The over-dependence on imported food produce will continue to have averse effect on the global food
prices because some countries will be better off than the others..... if i presume well!!!

Global Food Security a Threat?
A Global Solution is urgnetly needed, and there are many organisations out there trying to do just
that.
MICRONUTRIENT FOODS could save all !
There is a micronutrient Initiative prgramme run by Global Alliance for improved Nutrition (GAIN),
the Canadian International Development Agency, the US International Development Agency and the Bill
and melinda Gates Foundation have set this programme up but the total cost only amounts to barely
20% of the $0.5 billion per year it costs to feed micronutrients to Asia alone, Africa costs
probably less than half that.
I hoping to put a proposal forward for a micronutrient food to be produced without the use or need
for water. Just waiting to hear about the costs.
If more money was available then the micronutrient food which consists of Vitamin A, iron, Iodine
some Vitamin B and other minerals could save thousands of lives in both the Third/Developing
World.

One of the main causes food prices is fuel food, in order to find out sustainable solution of this
crisis we have totally ban fuel food that invented in this last years, it[s said 100 litter of fuel
food will be required an amount of food that one person may nitrite one years. These will in danger
the life of growing and third world countries as well who their life depends on what they import
from outside of the country.

I agree with how the rising costs of food now has affected everyone worldwide, and how it is also
related to the high prices of gas. I'm not sure if it has a direct link to how they are trying to
find alternate fuel by subsidizing corn, i mean its a good thing since gas and oil can only supply
us for so long, but is it really okay to use food and agriculture that is necessary for survival
(not just corn in particular) for the luxury of cars?

The food on the earth is enough to the entire population around the world, but it was not used
equally and productively. Some people believe the rapid increase of population cause food price. But
this is baseless claim, as long as people growth, production and development enlarge. Do not look
anywhere else, look yourself, you joined this world, how many things you invented, how many
successful ideas you contributed, how many new business you established and how many people you
employed. The population growth is a part of development when it is managed fairly.

The begining of the Civilization depended on AGRICULTURE - so does it's FUTURE.
The root cause of Food insecurity has not been discussed or higlighted in the present context. As
per my personal views over the years the governments and people across the globe have ignored
agriculture and more impetus has been on industry and business. Lately impetus has shifted towards
more specificaly IT sector and knowledge based business. The people have aligned away from the age
old occupation of food production. So major problem with regard to food security has arisen. It is
indeed not rightly said that food insecurity has been caused due to shift of focus towards
bio-fuels. Well production losses have been there due to area increase under bio-fuel crops but it
is still a myth that bio-fuels are root cause of price rise. The rising food prices due to lower
production now threatens global security.
To bring about change the focus needs to be shifted toward sustainable agriculture, new areas need
to be explored for enhancing food production. The regions specifically in Africa need to be
strengthened by providing them training, quality seeds as is being done by the Alliance for Green
Revolution spearheaded by former UN chief Kofi Annan.
Only speeches will not do, cocrete action and specific blueprint for food security at global level
must be laid out. the civil society organisations must understand the need to underscore about
agriculture. As Dr. Norman Borlaug had rightly said "Civilization as it is known today could not
have evolved, nor can it survive, without an adequate food supply".

Well, personally I think that bio-fuels are one of the main causes of the rise in food prices. I
mean, it is really good that there are people who are conscious about the problem of air pollution
due to fuels. But at the same time there are many people around the world who suffer from hunger,
and for me it's just not fair to use staples to produce things which crops are not meant to produce.
It's true that both pollution and hunger are priorities in this society, but we must first solve
what affects us more directly.
Just in a general form: perhaps bio-fuels should be based on the use of organic products that are
disposed or no longer needed.
Besides, there's this thing of transgenic crops, of which I'm not informed enough, but I think they
could be a solution for crop production.

Latin America countries produce a lot of cearls and crops. Since for that it was claimed that when
they got much productions, preffered to change into fuel. What do you about that?

For us to examine and evaluate the impacts of rising food rates on global security. We must look at
other factors that are in play, but, accelerated the inequities in food supply:l
1-Prior food stocks
2-food supply and food demand
3-changes in climate and weather patterns
4-post harvest loss-half of the food stocks in the world is poorly harvested, infected with
diseases, damaged by insects, damaged by tropical moisture.
5-poor yields due to poor seeds, lack of farm inputs,
6-the subsistence and marginal farming which creates less yields
7-During the time of 2007,excessive flooding and other natural disasters had impacted on the
supply.
The public reaction on bio fuel acted as a catalyst to an exploding food crisis.
Then, oil speculation started the whole process. The demand for food and oil had exceeded the supply
by 3 times.
Many nations are still vulnerable to costs of food and oil.
SOLUTIONS
1- Food policy
2-involve the farmers in the legislation, marketing and distribution of food
2-diversify the products
3-The national food policy should lower the costs of producing food for all stakeholders
4-Governments should look at local organic fertilizers as away to improve agricultural
productivity
5-

You've brought an excelllent facts and partial solution. But keep try to expand the solution
throughout of the world, since the market exchange affects same us where ever we are on the world.
Keep continue solutions and will add later on my side.

Good soils and growing conditions are sparsely distributed and in some places,a greedy few are
abusing the land, resulting into poverty and hunger for millions.
I did not look at bio fuels in the Midwest USA as the problem for for our food shortage in the
world, but as a catalyst to the chaos in an overburdened and underfed world.
I will limit my self to Africa and will discuss the Eastern region of
Africa-Djibouti,Eritrea,Ethiopia,Somalia,S.Sudan,N.E Uganda and the large tracts of land in
N.Kenya
1-All those countries have had persistent long droughts
2-Very few registered amount of rain
3-Its a Cereal based economy like wheat, sorghum and millet which can sustain on limited amount of
rainfall
4-Some in the region are pastoral and others have nomadic cultures which migrate in search of
pasture and water .Many of them do not produce food.
5-Armed and tribal conflicts. The whole region is worn with various conflicts spanning for a few
weeks to 2 decades.
6-political instability has reduced the peoples will to produce food.Always on the move.
7.The political violence and tribal politics in W.Kenya had rendered their inability to farm and has
decreased the supply of food in W.Kenya
8.The politics of land use in Kenya,Ethiopia had made it impossible for others to farm
9-Land tenure in East Africa
10-Most African countries have not had farm or food policy legislation since independence.
Most of them caught off guard with food riots
11.African countries have put more emphasis on the commercial Agriculture like Kenya
Highlands,Ethiopian highlands for coffee and In Zimbabwe, putting the entire nation at the brink of
collapse, when, commercial farmers increased the prices of food.
12-Agricultural drain. When able bodied men leave the villages for the cities
13-Decline and shrinking of village sizes. .Villages can longer produce enough food.
14.In those countries mentioned local farmers don't have farm and crop insurance to mitigate against
any loss
15-Soil degradation,low technology inputs
Lastly, there is no explicit policy on FOOD SECURITY

I will discuss the background of GRAIN POLITICS in the MIDWEST USA.
Animals played a useful role in keeping agricultural sustainably on ecological footing.Ani mals ate
grass, crop wastes, and kitchen scraps that people could not eat and turned them into food that
people can eat.Their manures provided soil with nutrients.Animals pulled plows and other services
that enhanced human life.
John Robbins,in his book,THE FOOD REVOLUTION,shows us that Factory farming is the major culprit of
food shortages.
Factory farming has replaced the traditional individual farms. Those farms process huge numbers of
animals in assembly lines
The increase in meat production has taken away huge chunks of land.More farmers in the West are
producing food like corn meant for people, for LIVESTOCK.
What created the food shortages were 3 factors:
1- farmers got subsidies for planting corn
2-Planting corn was more lucrative and paying than wheat.Few farmers planted wheat and barley. The
supply for wheat products in USA like Bread had doubled overnight. The demand for wheat had overtaken
the supply. This led to hoarding of the prices.
3-the demand for corn as a livestock feed had doubled
The business of food production has increasingly been taken over by large scale agri-business
companies in the WEST who specialize only producing for FACTORY FARMS
We are competing with livestock for the same food.
WATER IN MIDWEST
According to John Robbins,Ogallala aquifer that stretches from South Dakota to Texas ,is the largest
body of fresh water on Earth. It lies underneath some of the richest farm land in the world. The great
American grain belt. The Ogallala is a fossil aquifer left from melted glaciers of the last ice
age.Its waters are limited. Most of the water is used to irrigate the vast fields of the GRAIN BELT
