How do we get rid of technological devices?
Mar 2, 2010
|
|
Many technological devices are filled with harmful metals and chemicals in order for them to
function. However, how do we dispose of these devices safely?
There is always talk about being environmentally friendly, but I assume that almost everyone who
agrees with being environmentally friendly uses a technological device that is not friendly to our
environment. For example, cellphones and laptops that are not made of safe metals or chemicals or
biodegradable material.
Would you buy a biodegradable cellphone or latop? Has anyone thought of this?
Let me know what ya think...

Do you mean "how to dispose of cell phones, laptops and the like safely?" There are lots of
companies out there that do that kind of disposal, or re-using of parts.
The bigger question is "when will we start making these devices with the planet's resources in
mind?" Designed obsolescence is the blight of our planet. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a great problem but as they contain valuable metals, there will be a market to recycle
it.
What is more of a problem are these new ecological bulbs that are replacing the old incandescent
ones. They are full of mercury and other toxic substances and rather than having special places to
recycle them, most will just throw them into the rubbish which means they will end up in land fill
and allow those poisons to leach into the water system and kill us that way.
Sometimes the environment lobby doesn't think things through to the end. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, that is what I mean. Do you think there are enough companies that are recycling these products?
Think of how many there in countries across the planet.
No group of companies could possibly handle that capacity right now.

You are correct. We create far too much "garbage" and no, there is no real effort being made to curb
that consumption. As a matter of fact, the opposite is true due to the monetary system that mandates
that we consume and consume with no thought about the disposal or recycling of the product.
On the upside though, if consumers started speaking to these companies with their purchasing power
and demanding that the products are better thought out, companies will change their practices. It's
up to us as consumers to change the vendors' attitudes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with you Barbara. It is the voice of the consumer that is needed to make a difference and a
change.
Boycott certain companies or ship products that are not recyclable back to the company for them to
dispose of.
These are some ideas to be considered.
Anyone have any?

I agree with being environmentally friendly, but most electronic devices are made to be durable. I
think the lifespan of a laptop or cell phone would justify the materials used to make the devices.

We don't get rid of devices, but instead we recycle them. Some store have a bin to place your old
cell phones to have them recycled and for laptops I think office stores will recycle them.

I think that it would be great to make devices more green, but I think that it will make the
products cost a lot more and many people wont be able to afford it, or would rather pay less for the
toxic metals used in devices. If anything, devices should come with an alternative greener version
so that people can have an option.
