The internet as a tool for social & political activism - Your thoughts?
Feb 19, 2010

I'm in my final year of high school in Australia and for one of my subjects (Society & Culture)
I'm doing a major research project on the role that the Internet has played in revolutionizing the
way that young people participate in their local/global communities and also facilitate activism.
Obviously, then, this site interests me enormously, and I'm hoping that I shall be able to use it
(along with other, similar sites) as a case study.
So I was wondering, does anyone here have any input on the topic? I'm sure you all do - things like,
why has the Internet become such a prominent tool for activism when other methods have already
proven successful in the past? Do you think that the Internet has had greater success than other
forms of activism, and in what way? Is the Internet used in this way exclusively by young people;
why/why not?
These are just my ideas, but what I'm really interested in is yours! This is all rather new to me,
but I'm sure that some of you have been involved for a long time, and I'd love different
perspectives. What would ALSO be incredibly helpful to me would be if you could all take a few
moments to fill out my questionnaire on the topic - only 11 questions, all multiple choice and
getting a large amount of responses is absolutely crucial to my research. The link:

Thanks all, I'm really looking forward to hearing anything you have to say!

It is by all means. But like all great things it can be misused, which it also is flagrantly! It
also gives people the freedom to say and write what they REALLY feel as well, there is no need to be
politically correct when you can hide behind anonymity, so its a good yardstick to look at a wide
spectrum of what types of opinions people hold that they wouldn't necessarily share out in public.

Unfortunately, person to person interactions can be shallow and so can depth of
understanding of issues... need to try and avoid the echo chamber pitfalls

Social media and technology have promoted a materialistic mentality in kids. It has brought on a lot
of pressure on students to cope with this changing trend. Some have even gone into depression for
not being able to cope with the social pressures thrust by social media.
Not everyone can pull of an attractive image on social media, right? Those who don't are
discriminated by others. Today, being social and possessing technology defines the status of an
individual.
