Volunteering in Latin America
November 30, 2004 - 12:51 PM

Hey folks,

Im a Special Needs Teacher in Dublin and am hoping to volunteer in Latin America after Christmas. The only propblem is that all organisatons and charities want me to pay to go. (Goes towards accomodation, food, etc.)
Would be very greatful of any information people might have on how to volunteer without having to pay. I have also heard that this type of work is easy to find if you simply go and ask around.

Sick of searching endless web pages,

Guigsy.

Hi there,

You might be interested in the website that I developed for precisely this reason - low volunteering costs! It's located at http://www.kidsworldwide.org

You basically only pay for your food and accomodation whilst there at local rates (ie less than $150 a month). If you want to volunteer for long term, then the directors of the projects often waive that contribution after a few months as well.

We currently have a street kids project in Cajamraca, Peru and an orphanage near Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on the website seeking volunteers. I know that the Peru project defintely will have space over the Xmas period, but it's cutting it rather close now!!

If you want to follow this up, easiest way to get hold of me is through the website mentioned above (the FAQ page has a link in it which will send the email to me). I am weary of giving out email addresses on the internet due to spam robots picking them up! Otherwise you can try messaging me through TIG here - I should check it soon enough.
