What can we do?

How can we make Education integral in the understanding of what sustainable development is.
How can we educate young (and old) people into understanding the problems Earth and its peoples are
facing, and what they can do about it?

we'd have to tell them ourselves

Put together some sort of vedio explaining what sustainable development is, why it's important, how
ppl can be effected and how they can help. Then destrubute it to schools, or try to get it on tv.
Ok I know that's harder to do then it sounds. But I'm sure there is a way to get funding and tons of
ppl from all over who would do what they could to help the cause, like send in written reports that
ppl might be able to relate to.
If that's not a good idea, i'm sure we can come up with something if we put our minds to it.

I just put this question up in the education forum for a broader discussion...
WHY should schools teach about sustainable development Pred? Why don't they do it now?
Large corporations rely on the ability to perpetuate the economic stagnation of the third world in
order to raise their profits and sustain their growth. Why should they use their clout in schools to
promote sustainable development? It would damage their business!
Governments subsidize farms (in the US and Canada) that continue to rely on heavy pesticide use and
under-production to propel their existence. Why should these farmers use their political clout to
encourage schools to teach sustainable development? It would harm their livelihood!
Big business and bad government both need Starbox and McBurgers to help further the development of
the middle class, strip-mall, white American suburbia that has crept into so many corners of the
world. Why should they encourage schools to teach something that would harm this cycle of economic
expansion that has only served to make them richer?
Teachers themselves don't stand to prosper from ignoring sustainable development. They are not the
"problem."
School administrators themselves don't stand to prosper from ignoring sustainable development. They
aren't the "problem."
One of the problems is the amount of influence and control Corporate Power has over schools. There
is one major barrier to teaching sustainable development in schools.
The other major barrier is Us. It is our consumerist psyche that perpetuates the problem worse, and
I am part of the problem. I like "stuff." I like MY stuff. And until I change my mind, my actions
and my life, I contribute to the problem.
The point is, sustainable development is more than just a topic for debate and preaching.
Sustainability is a way of living. And I am no greener, no eco-freak. I'm just a guy whose seen
behind their eyes, and is scared of the future they envision.
