[Poll] 3Blindmen and an Elephant
October 27, 2004 - 10:17 AM

Definition:
Zero Tolerance is a policy of not tolerating undesirable behavior, such as violence or illegal drug use in the school system. It gives severe penalties even if it's a first offense and it punishes both major and minor behaviours equally severely.

This mainly occurs in most schools in the Untied States and in Canada, but even if your not from these countries if you want you can still post your input on this topic.

What are your opions on Zero Tolerance in the Education system? Do you believe that it makes schools safer? or do you believe that Zero Tolerance is unfair to students and causes discrimination to people of colour?

Zero Tolerance is Dependable
October 28, 2004 - 02:01 AM

Human beings are weak and they do create a very weak laws and rules that could not be absolute. Man/Women made laws need continous amendments and changes every now and then.
I personally support Zero Tolerance but it depends on targeted behaviours and proposed punishments on it. I am Zero Tolerent to human rights and freedoms and do beleive that I am free to extend and strech my arm as far as I could. But what about if my arm would hit someone? Now I am
not free to strech it.

Depends what sort of punishment happens to the *offender*

- I am against physical punishment

- I prefer "reinstatement of fairness"

- Good way is a temporar separation of offender and other participants in class. But on a very refined way.

Thank you.

Zero Tolerance generally takes the decision making out of the hands of authority like school administrators. My brother told me that in his high school they started a Zero Tolerance policy regarding fighting. Basically if you *ever* got in a fight, even if you were getting beat up!, you would be in big trouble on your first offense. I think a lot of good kids are being caught up in policies like this. It reminds me of those "three strikes" laws here in the US where if you commit three felonies, you go away (to jail) basically forever. That takes away the power of judges to "judge" bases on the merits of a case. Instead they have to "rubber stamp" cases that are a third strike even if there may be mitigating circumstances.

Good definitions.

BTW: When we talk about tolerance we show it when we have to "overwhelm" ourselves in order to go against our principles at times - if those principles may not be wide enough etc.

i don't know why the school system would think that zero tolerance is effective, because kids who are suspended will only go to streets and make matters worse . it's safer to be in school and have the problem solved there.
