Lake Victoria fish depleted says study
October 25, 2004 - 11:52 AM

There is fish depletion on the near shore areas of Lake Victoria according to initial findings from a three-year survey. The findings show that fishermen need to go further ashore to catch fish.

The surveys were carried out on Lake Victoria in 2000, 2002 and 2004 to determine certain characteristics of the fishing trends to guide development and management of the sector.

The study, posted on the Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project (LVEMP) website, also found out that there are inadequate facilities at the fish landings.

The survey found out that the number of fishermen on the lake had increased from 129,305 to 175,890, fishing crafts increased from 42,483 to 52,479, and gill nets from 655,053 to 984,084 between 2000 and 2002. This indicates an increase in fishing efforts. Also discovered was that the ratio of fisheries officers per landing site is 1:3.
