The Psychological Impact of Music
October 25, 2004 - 10:56 AM

Question: What do music and gravity have in common?
Answer: They both influence our lives tremendously, but most know very little about HOW either one works. Yet, when we understand the forces of gravity and respect its power, we can fly airplanes, build bridges, land people on the moon, and send probes to Jupiter and beyond.

Music is a unique and powerful form of understanding and communication. Verbal communication (or language) is the most significant "invention" of Homo sapiens. It allowed social groups to express themselves in unique ways, cultures to advance, and modern life to exist. Music has been part of all of this.

No one knows when music began. My guess is that it started before formal language. Our ancestors may have found certain rhythms or beats and tapped them out on stones or wood. They made sounds with their vocal chords that created feelings, expressions, and motivations unlike anything before. The more verbal language and musical instruments evolved, the more important and influential music became.

Music is more than just words or melody. The combination of rhythm, cadence, pitch, tone, and words makes it unique among all other forms of communication. We find it in every culture. Even more, it became and still is an integral part of our most important human strivings and events: birth, death, love, political and social expression, war, and religion.

The psychological impact of music may transcend any of our modern electronic communication techniques.

The right words and/or the right melody can create within us, a powerful response. We cannot help but respond when we hear a song that touches the depths of our heart or brings back to life an important memory. Without realizing it, we are beckoned to aspirations. Such are the songs in this book. They evoke our response on a conscious level. More importantly, they touch our emotions, inner strivings, and hopes in ways that nothing else can. This is the power of music.

I must say, it's quite impressive how well you were able to analyze every significant psychological impact of music...and I really can't agree more.

However, I doubt many people, especially adolescents of today (not to be stereotypical), consider music they listen to with such depth. If you're referring to religious or sacred melodies...then perhaps that perspective still applies. Otherwise, I would think that modern music is more of a source of entertainment within the public's eye. Sure, it can 'evoke our response on a conscious level' or even be used to unburden certain emotions...but in the long run, we listen to music simply because we enjoy it. Whether you approach it another way from others or not, we can all concur that we find special qualities in our own preferable genre of music. I suppose my point is to demonstrate the lack of need of complicating the influence of music...or exert such importance to it.

Nevertheless, we still adore it very much but the level or angle of viewing it is just at a rather different level from what you believe. I would actually say the

Hi
I really agree with all of you. And you music influences us. Here teens try to act like the people in music videos. In a way music is good thing and a bad thing. Because music does calm us down but some music is bad for you because it has swearing in and from that people start to also swear. Well thats reall it.

i have to agree that music affects us in a concious level as welll as a sub- concious level. the type of music you listen to affects your lifestyle in a very real way. i'm not saying that if you listen to g-unit or slim shady yoor going to turn into some thug who's destined to be violent but if you don't have anything to hold on to or to block off that violence then it's pretty hard to shake off that bad... stuff for lack of a better word.

Yes Music is strage and it makes the mind become stuck at a particular stream of sub-conciousness one tune will influence actions for a period of time after listening to that music. For example if you Listen to Tito Puente for 1 hour and then just stop listening to the songs.... your biologial memory will still be going.. I think its kind of like dropping a stone into water. There is an impact and there are ripples that eventually fade away. Its a bit like how memory works... now if one was to keep on making waves with music over and over and since humans have the ability to retain information the ripples would stay for longer periods of time.

yeah, im sure music effects SOME people. not everybody has the same mind. not every human is effected by the same thing in the same way. music may cause violence, but it may cause a need for peace. it depends on how the person interprets the lyrics. normally, a person would take lyrics violently because they are violent deep deep down and dont know it. this is what i think anyway.

I think Music is another powerful tool in engineering people's mind to do many things...either good or bad depending on the lyrics and the message.

It has to do with mind, soul and body.

logisticals, i like the way u told us about music.
music is a great language with whom we can tell a lot, or nothing. music comes from our hearts from the day we were born. it seems like we can't live with it. if u'r not listenning to it on the radio, tv u r singing it in your mind or aloud or u r tapping with your hands or legs ... or sth. it is a tool with which we communicate, or it makes our heart happy or sad ... there could be told a lot about it. but i just wanted to say, how this discussion is.
and, yeah, some artists want to make music and what they make, it's stupid, because not everybody can make good music. there r just a few of them, or just a few good songs from one author ...

every thing you say is true... well all i read is true, but i really do think that hip hop is not really that meaningful because i mean come on! "if i was a rich girl, nananananananana! see i'd have all the money in the world, if i was a wealthy girl" is that supposed to appeal to people?? its just a waste of space, and it has no meaning! who cares if u want MONEY because its just so self centered! gwen stefani is just one of the many artists whose songs have no meaning and are brainwashing people by their catching and annoying tunes!

Music does affect us psychologically. But it is also used as another excuse for people to blame their actions on. Music does not cause violence but it may emphasizes and influences it. Music doesn't make people go out and do the things they do. Yes, many people follow the conduct of some artists but at the same time it is a persons responsibilty for themselves. Music is something that touches us within. Im not referring to the mind numbing idiotic lyrics we have today such as "shake it", "bootilicious" etc. but more to lyrics that actually mean something.
Music isn't just about the lyrics though. Have you ever just sat there listening to jazz? to the pure sound of a piano or saxophone.. the melodys so soothing and relaxing. That is music at its best, when it is pure and real...

Music is all about creativity and whatever the kind of music an artist is specialized in ..you will all agree its artistic.personally i frown upon music that is full of bad mouthing and trash but in the long run you have to appreciate how they do it.I love reggae music and i agree that music has a very great psychological impact and its upon you to check out yourself that you only take the positive elements from the vibes and not be misled by the lifestyles of some artists but music in essence is good to your health..

First, I just wanted to mention that there are some hip hop artists who don't create the typical "imma bust a cap" crap - if you move to more underground stuff, it's a lot more meaningful...download "honest expressions" by binary star and you'll see what I mean.

Moving on - personally, I couldn't leave without music. Playing/writing songs on my bass is one of the most soothing things I can do to pass the time. I always have music on, whether it's inspiring me or just reflecting the mood I'm in.

In terms of "brainwashing", you have to start taking a closer look at where the music you're listening to comes from. If watching the top 40 or something equally mainstream, a lot of the stuff you're hearing isn't written by the artists preforming it...so idolizing them is silly. In fact, idolizing anyone is silly, I think. It's okay to look up to someone, or to respect someone, but it's dangerous to support them blindly. It's important to always question the information or ideas that come to you. The more educated a population, the harder they are to control.

It's easy to make a scapegoat for your actions - but it's time to take some responsibility. You've got a brain, and you control it - so use it.

I probably rambled, but hopefully you got the point.
