Ads and Anti-ads

Well... the jury is in. According to a new study, anti-smoking ads aimed at young people are more effective if they portray smoking as something promoted by multi-billion dollar corporations.
According to http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2002/08/19/Consumers/smoking_ads020819, "The group pointed to anti-smoking campaigns in California, Florida and Massachusetts as the most successful. They all used a strategy called "tobacco-industry denormalization," which focuses on the "industry's behaviour in the tobacco epidemic," the letter said. Ads that use this strategy are especially effective on teenagers because they depict smoking not as an act of rebellion but as a form of submission to the tobacco industry."
How do we apply this to other areas?

This is interesting!
Over here, the government uses shock-tactics (like showing disected lungs, cancerous osophegus' etc) to convince people to quit.
This information will certainly filter down to our country. Perhaps we'll see some ads making fun of large corporations from now on.
Interesting.

Graphic images

Hi Pred,
Yeah... they tried putting graphic anti-smoking images on cigarette packages in Canada too. The only problem is that it spawned a whole new industry of people manufacturing cigarette holders to cover the images. Most of the covers feature tongue-in-cheek pro-smoking messages.
Now they are trying to figure out whether and how to regulate that industry. See http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2002/08/14/Consumers/cigarette_covers020814
It's just one of those lessons in how interlinked marketing and consumption really are; and how much of the consumption is about image and rebellion against any groups perceived to be setting rules.

I spoke at a conference here in Melbourne and this morning for breakfast I had some toast and put some peanut butter on it -- Kraft peanut butter.
I talked during my presentation about how young people really need to be made more aware of the steps they can take to NOT support the cigarette industry -- it's not just not smoking but being more aware overall of their decisions and who is really gaining from their consumption. I think it does make a difference.

This relates to alot of music, in different genre's

Different catagories of music often have artists which try rebeling against such corperations, on all fronts.
Bands/Artists Such As:
Bob Marley - Reggae
Anti-Flag - Punk (NOT Pop-Punk like blink182)
Canderia - Hardcore/Rap
There are also lots of hip hop artists which discuss these topics in their lyrics, if you can get past what you dont like, and read the lyrics to some of these bands, you might change your views!
STAY OPEN MINDED, TRY NEW THINGS, GET ACTIVE!
PEACE, ONE LOVE, & UNITY!!!!!

Even more bands! ... and they have a voice!!!!

Unlike most of us suppressed youth living in North America, alot of artists have a voice, not only to preach & teach things to you, but also to others. PLEASE support local music, and music is trying to make a change!
-Bob Dylan is definatly in that catagorie
-K-OS (New Hip-Hop Artist)
-Bad Religion (Their name only represents that diffrent religions cause problems, (Ex. Ireland, Christians Vs. Prodistant.. and if you know anyone in Ireland, you know that the rivalry is serious, if you go into the wrong area, your dead.)
-Hatebreed - (Hardcore)
-Sick Of It All (New York HardCore/Punk)
-Sublime
-311
-Rage Against The Machine
-System Of A Down
-Jurrasic 5 (Really good jazzy rap! AWESOME BAND!)
If you guys can think of more, PLEASE post em!
SPREAD THE WORD, MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!!
STOP THE HATE, STOP THE RACISM, SAVE THE PLANET.
Peace, Love & Unity for ALL!

Nike is extremely bad, along with thousands of other corperations.
Large corperations are always supported by their governments (obviously), this is how it works:
Nike pays people in poor countries less than 50cents a day, to make shoes (usually in unsanitary, unsafe conditions).
This is where the United States comes into play, they make treaties with other countries (and pretty much every countrie agrees, because the US is a power house). So a treatie for FREE TRADE is signed. (These poor countries usually happily accept, thinking that they will have high quality american products shipped to their countrie, without any tarrifs (taxes).
The united states only does this, so that companies like nike, can make more profit, and in turn strengthen the US economy, while weakening 2nd & 3rd World countries.
Another trick of the US, is a small island that starts with an S (forgot the name of it :P) off the east coast of japan. It is VERY VERY small, but large enough for a small industrialized city nobody knows about. The US obtained this land during WW2 from japan, and many japanese still live there. The same thing goes on their, accept the USA doesnt have to make any free trade laws. HOWEVER, they can still pay people less than .50cents a DAY to make products that are stamped with 'MADE IN USA' ... even though its made half way around the world, by the poor, for the rich.
