Human Intolerance

Hey People,
I need some help for a school assignment, but also I think that this could be a good point of discussion. In, English (yes, you read right) we are doing something on Human IOntolerance, What it is, is it positive or negative and anything to do with it. Just a thought that, if people wantedto, couuld contribute to this and tell everybody what the ythink intolerance is.
Thanks
Betsy

well, to me human intolerance is definitely a negative aspect of our society, as it discriminates against a person or group.
to me, human intolerance is anytime a person refuses to understand a person and judges someone based on a cursory evaluation or a personal characteristic. but thats just my opinion...

A positive side to intolerance...
Well, I think one of the few positives to intolerance is that it serves as a way to seperate society into groups of different stature, race, wealth, affluence, level of education, and the like. Effectively it would make a census rather easy to complete.
But, sadly - the negatives simply outweigh the single positive (which is more like a joke.)
I think perhaps the only thing humanity has to console itself with over its own prejudices is that, one day, we will perhaps not only be born equal, but live as equal.

While I dont like intolerant people, I am somewhat glad they exist.
So many people claim they love their multicultural societies (i know i do - thats why i love sydney), and yet claim that people should "be tolerant" of others beleifs.
But in a tolerant society, when barriers get broken down, in the longer term the multicultures cease to exist, there is a gradual homogenising effect, where as a society with intolerant people will preserve this multiculture. And while one could never justify such an argument with ethnic cleansing and the like, i will always be glad that intolerant people exist, it certainly makes the world more interesting in this sense.

Intolerance does have a good side, ya know. Everyone here is thinking along lines of Culture, Religion etc - what about about Wife Beating? Abuse? Threatening Behavior? should these be tolerated as well?
Intolerance doesn't have to mean Racist, Agist etc.... sometimes it's the person who bucks the trend. Who challenges the existing institutions. A mutliculturists amoung Racists would be 'intolerant' of that group for example.

getting tolerant would mean getting to know what the people think about the "other".that would mean an interaction between the different groups.this is too idealistic for all of us have an excess baggage of preconcieved notions and ideas.as it is said show me a person who hasnt slandered once and i shall show you the gates of paradise.
tolerance starts from making efforts to understand.to unlearn what we have learnt.
intolerance is not being human at all.intolerance is denying of space.denial of right to express self.
