Cybers and small towns

When i first started my cyber in a small town i thought i had hit the jack pot why? coz i thought i had brought the internet services to the people closer, but not so i have worked in cyber for the past one and half year in a small town. And what i learned from all that time left me really puzzled and i would like responses from others who have worked in cybers located in small towns especially in Kenya.
Those interested in internet are quite a very small number why? i can't give a difinitive answer but i can say is that majority are not interested in emails and websites either because they don't wanna know or they basically aren't interested.
The people who generally come to browse in the cybers are older people who work in International Agencies, tour guides, those with relatives out of the country and that percentage is very small about 30%, so where are the rest?
When i compare cybers in big towns to small towns there is just no comparison, in big towns the cybers are usually packed with people browsing and some even having to wait for others to finish so that they too can browse the internet and that's not so in cybers in small towns! Yet the charges are the same. does that mean people in big towns are more informed than their counterparts in small towns?
I would like to get more responses on this!

I THINK I KNOW, LEMME HAVE A CRACK AT IT!!

Hey man, sounds really good about what you're doing in such a small place. I'm from Tokelau, and we have only recently been able to connect to the internet.
Tokelau is a group of four atolls (politically speaking, only three atolls) in the South Pacific Ocean. Right, we are in the move to Free Association with New Zealand, but that's not what i'm here to talk about! I work for the local community FM radio station - one of three in Tokelau.
I was on the team that put up the lines for the internet over here, and i'll tell you, once we finally got online, we were amazed at the capabilities of the internet. But what really amazed us, is that NO ONE really cared. To a lot of people, it was just another unneccesary change to village. Now that must really hurt after all that labour to get everyone online.
So what our team had to do, was to actually get the people to get together, and discuss what the internet was, and it is capable of. The main point that we were tryin to ram home, was that the internet is the cheapest, and most fastest way of communications in the world. Also, to date, it is the world's largest source for news and information. From news about your country, to election results from another country, to learning what your favourite actor's favourite soft drink is, it's all there, waiting for you look into it.
Now this was back in September, and to date, our cybercafe here in my home village, is packed out almost everyday - we've had to make booking times, just so that we can get through everybody!!
I suppose what I can suggest, is that the reason why people would NOT be interested in it, could be because they don't understand fully what the internet is about. Communication and information... that's my opinion anyway.
Hopefully this helps you out.... good luck!!

Thanks for that information to see how well you internet cafe is doing in your community, am still trying to work it out im my small town but so far i haven't found any luck. more downs and most times am very much discouraged. the best thing about you is that you had a team to work it out here am alone in this and it's a real struggle. chances are i might close but i don't want to give up so easily.
Please witchdotak tell me what strategy you used to get to the people. Also here the rate of ignorance or illietracy is quite high so that is another factor i consider but the majority who seem to be informed are still ignorant. Sometimes i don't know what to really do.
I hope all the best for you and your internet cafe, have fun.
