Changing discussion thread titles
October 14, 2004 - 03:40 AM

Can one of the TIG programmers please fix the discussion board bug that keeps changing the titles of threads?

As far as I can tell, if someone later adds a title to a posting, it often changes the name of the whole thread. http://www.takingitglobal.org/discuss/showthread.html?s=&threadid=9486 is the most recent example I noticed.

It makes it very hard to monitor threads of interest (since the name changes) and often leads to incoherently named threads.

It's happened again... This time changing "Gay Marriage" to "State Same-Sex Marriage Ban Ammendments" following my post for the thread http://www.takingitglobal.org/discuss/showthread.php?threadid=4536&tag=mm.nd

Very frustrating

Hey Terri!

Can you show me? For me, the thread is still called "Gay Marriage"

Hmm... I tried using two different accounts and was unable to change the subject. We did fix this a week ago or so. If it happens again, let me know, because I can't replicate it here.

Very strange... it's now back to being "Gay Marriage" for me as well. Could it be because another person added a post without a title after mine? Could that have flipped it back to the original title?

The first instance I pointed out "Yes" is still "Yes." One way to test the theory is to post something else in that thread and see if it filps back to the original as well...

Will do. I just find that in general, people seem willing to create more provocative titles for individual postings than for threads. With this bug, entire threads suddenly SEEM much more hostile/opinionated than they really are; it can polarize debate pretty quickly.

Looking forward to the new coding for the boards. 5 files?!?!? Holy cow! How do you stay sane?

We don't touch discussions, that's how big grin

ha!

I still can't find the code that fixes the location of smilies in the threads :P

Discussion boards take 75 pages! Worst coding ever!

And I agree, a huge amount of hostility can be created from just the title of a thread. It's our next project smile

Hi Hugh,

Just to flag that this problem seems to have continued in v5 -- although it's hard to tell whether the name change occured before/after the flip. The most obvious example on this one is the one now titled "To all the Gay Haters". I'm 99.9% certain that was not the original thread title, but rather the title of an individual posting within the thread which somehow took over as the thread name...

- Terri

yeah, we didn't redesign forums so the same problems will be there smile

hehe... we will be redesigning and and building from the bottom up so that they not only look better, but actually work properly. The current forums are extremely difficult to edit because each page is in about 3-5 seperate html files. So, for example, the submit page for a post is in 5 files.

Someone looked at this a while ago and they couldn't figure out why this happened, so I don't think it will be fixed until we redesign things. In the mean time, let me know and I can move the topic back to what it was originally.

We're basically not touching discussions because it is a) difficult to figure out (as you mentioned, 90 pages total) and b) we're going to re-write them completely because of multiple reasons.

Hopefully that'll be our next big project.

That makes me laugh, its not difficult code to figure out in the discussion boards. There are 15 or so code pages and 75 or so templates parts. Everything works in harmony. When I left TIG, I knew there were 3-5 errors remaining that my mandidate didn't include to fix.. I'm kind of disappointed no one could/would fix them.

PS. There are cool features on the discussion boards hidden that I wrote before I left that people at TIG voted down for reasons I never understood. So the next person working on the discussion board could easily implement a few features. For example: For the amount of discussion board posts users have made there is a level system in place where users obtain higher status for contributions.. Just uncomment and voila.

We realize the discussion thread titles bug does happen quite frequently. I know Hugh has a lot of responsibilities here and may not have a lot of time for changes to individuals threads.

Taikod, if you or any other member would like to see a thread re-titled, feel free to email me (with the original title if you have it) at jon@takingitglobal.org. I can handle the individual changes and it probably best fits under my job description anyhow.

A new thread problem
October 12, 2005 - 04:59 AM

Post New Thread is not working. I am able to write the post but when the post is submitted, the following error message occurs:

We're sorry! There's an error with this database that will be fixed as soon as possible!

I can't start a new thread on this because it's not working. It'd be great to get this fixed smile
