Your MDGs - Order of Importance and Immediate Action
February 12, 2010 - 11:42 PM

Hey guys,
I'm sure you're all more than aware of the 8 Millenium Development Goals already. 10 years has passed since the leaders of the world pledged to implement the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. That leads me to question what can we do in the remaining 5 years to reach these goals.
It was a pledge to:
1. eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. achieve universal primary education
3. promote gender equality and empower women
4. reduce child mortality
5. improve maternal health
6. combat hiv/aids, malaria, and other diseases
7. ensure environmental sustainability
8. develop a global partnership for development
Some people seem to see this as the rank of order of importance of each goal. Though I think there should be NO order and we should concerntrate on improving the state of the situation all individually, I'd like to know in which order you would place immediate action for, if we could not multi-task.
You should end up with a combination which should make it easy for us to compare and come up with a general concensus. (In the order of most important to least important to you.)
I wonder how many different or similiar combinations we all possess?
Here's mine:
2 7 1 3 4 5 6 8
Please feel free to explain why you have decided why you have put it in the certain rank if you feel up to it and the immediate action we need to take.
Thanks for contributing!

7. ensure environmental sustainability
8. develop a global partnership for development
First of all, Good topic
My combination is as follows:
8 2 4 7 1 6 5 3
8 is first as if we didn't have the ability to multi task the goals, then developing a global partnership and shared knowledge would increase the completion of all goals significantly.
Universal education would be next as in partnership with global partnership is would further develop the speed and effciency of the MDG's
And lastly would be empowering woman and equality. Not because im being sexist in any way, because woman are already of equal status of men in society, so i do not see a reason to work to hard on that. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Regards ArKadian.

1. eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. achieve universal primary education
3. promote gender equality and empower women
4. reduce child mortality
5. improve maternal health
6. combat hiv/aids, malaria, and other diseases
7. ensure environmental sustainability
8. develop a global partnership for development
If I were to arrange this goals in order, it would look like this:
2. achieve primary universal education- Like what has been said for many times before, we can get closer to achieving the other MDGs by enhancing education.
1. eradicate extreme poverty- This comes next after goal no.2. Unlike the other problems, this needs immediate attention since hunger and homelessness can cause more and faster deaths than the other problems. This can also bring us closer to the other goals like goals 4,5 and 6.
8. develop a global partnership for development- This is my third most important goal because this can help a lot in the fast-tracking of the realization of the other goals. More developed countries can help the other developing countries so that development would be in a faster pace.
3. promote gender equality and empower women- I have to say that this is my fourth most important goal because through this goal, women will have more power to fight for their rights. As a result, maternal health is also boosted.
5. improve maternal health- This comes after goal 3 because it is partially solved by empowering women.
4. reduce child mortality- Since most child mortalities occur during childbirth, we have to ensure that maternal health is first improved before this goal.
7. ensure environmental sustainability- Although I have placed this in the bottom part of my list, it does not mean that this goal is not important. Everything we have worked for will be rendered useless if the place where we live will be gone forever.
6. combat hiv/aids, malaria, and other diseases- If the first other goals are achieved, we won't have to worry much about this goal since people will already have better capabilities to combat this problems.
This list is just my personal opinion. I know that some of you will have other arrangements but still we can all conclude that each and every goal is important.

Hey Guys!
Mine are as follows:
2
8
1
7
4
6
3
5
I chose Goal 2 as my first because education, for me, will always be the stepping stone of every person. And having a universal primary education would improve a lot of children to excel.
Goal 5 would be the last because, for me, it is not as crucial as the other goals. I believe that if that the other goals should be prioritized more than this goal.

Here's mine:
2, 1, 3, 7, 6, 4, 5, 8
2 - because universal primary education will enlighten on such a scale that greater awareness and understanding on the rest 7 will take place.
1 - I don't think this one needs an explanation. Extreme poverty is both cruel and hampering for worldwide development.
3 - gender inequality has extreme consequences in my country and it needs to be overcome soon.
7 - we depend so greatly on nature that it is beyond imagination. At the rate at which it is being damaged, we won't have much left unless, of course, prevention is established.
6 - like poverty, disease is cruel and hindering. It needs to be overcome to the most possible extent.
4 and 5 - I give them equal importance.
8 - despite the importance of achieving a global partnership, the other goals affect humanity most positively.

I still think that improving education is the most important MDG that we should archive before the other MDGs.
Most of the problem will be solve if everyone have a level of education. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To share is to get :)

Perhaps I don't know too much on what Globalisation is actually but i've put that as my last too! (out of ignorance though) Anyone care to explain what Globalisation is to me please?

If what you are referring to by globalization, is rule 8, the develop a global partnership,
This is a goal set to establish relations between all coutnries and share all knowledge and research, technology, have all countries on the same level of development.
This will stop things such as the USA finding a cure for something, then monopolizing on it, and selling it to other countries for profit, All countries will share research, information etc.
I put it as first, as if we achieve this then multiple countries will not be using the same resources working on 1 thing, when they could combine resources and potentially reach the end product faster, and ultimatly more effciiently or sustainably, and then they could all move onto bigger and better things.
If we acheive this then ALL technology will advance at a more then current rapid pace, which is so important and would make acheiving the other MDG's so much easier and possibly to a better quality.
Metophorically speaking, picture the goal like this.
We are all raindrops racing down a window, all slowly making the same progress down the window. but then suddenly, 2 raindrops combine, and surpass the rest, then a 3rd falls into the path and contributes down the slip stream. Now those 3 raindrops combined made faster progress then all the other 50 on the window. Imagine if all 50 combine, it would create progress like you couldn't imagine. This is what goal 8 is. I hope i helped --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Regards ArKadian.

So in simple words: to essentially become ONE united world?
How would we compromise the differences between different cultures, traditions and conflicting views or political systems?
It's not that I'm against this idea just there are indeed complications to overcome before we can 'globalize' dont you think?

Not one united world, but a shared research / development stream.
So all countries share developments with each other instead of using them to gain an advantage over others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Regards ArKadian.
