Do Transnational Corporation Exacerbate Underdevelopment in the Third World?

At a time when it is usually argued that the emergence of Transnational Corporations (TNCs) has led to the alleged demise of the nation state, we find a line of argument regarding the negative causal association between TNCs and development of the Third World. This states that because multinational companies are controlled by the power external to the countries that they exist in due to the fact that they are not companies of those countries but companies in those countries, they contribute nothing to the development of those countries; rather they exacerbate their present poor developmental condition. Is this argument built on a strong logic? If this line of reasoning is right, would it be appropriate to say that it should be made the basis for opposing multinational companies? If this is right, would it be appropriate to allow multinational corporations to operate on their own logic?
