Hi Tarek,
Lol, it's Megan!!! (from school....)
Anyways, yeah, I think that of course media does affect the way some people view themselves. Because when you turn on the TV, you normally see attractive, slim, and well kept people on the shows and movies. I'm sure this does infleunce many peoples' self esteem and confidence, because they may get the feeling that they may not look or be a certain way that is "desirable". Now what I wish is that the media would be more realistic in portraying certain things, and not always try to be so in your face and to make things so fake and wrong. Most messages that the media sends out are extremely superficial and aren't the best morals or ideas to follow.
So although there are some times when Media can be used in effective and good ways to send out good moral messages, it is often used to "brainwash" people in trying to get into consumerism. <-Dunno if that's the right word...
Anyways Tarek, that's all I have to say, so talk to you later at school!

TV Cruel Jokes

I do agree.
Also, I noticed that a lot of jokes on TV are aimed to make fun of people that are overweight. That is a form of indirectly harassment. This may cause people to avoid having body fat, thus causing them to try to be thin, often in ways with harmful effects to the person commiting the action.

Hi,
The media has a lot of influence on people cos most of what we see,do or act comes from the media.
Most people believe very strongly and depend on media for information to do certain things.
Today, we have more people involved in slimming activities. Designers use slim people to promote their work, models a re usually slim people, in advert and most things, Beauty pageant organizers use slimmness and height to judge ,all these and many more make the media promote certain body image over others and the only veritable tool to reach out to people is the Media .
So the media is very strong in this area.
best regards
Oke Rotimi

I watched TV all my life until a few years ago when I decided most of it was mindless consumerist garbage. People are too sensitive, I used to get bullied in school until I stopped trying to impress other people and started living by my own rules. Complaining that watching Paris Hilton on TV makes you feel bad is like saying eating dog crap makes you feel bad - of course it does - its all crap. Being self conscious is just as bad as being shallow. Its still being superficial - its just directed inwards. Don’t let a bunch of superficial, cheep, soulless television programs effect you. Shows like Fear Factor where people eat rat testicles for entertainment show how far our culture has degenerated. I wish the media was not the flaming sack of garbage that it is but fat jokes and lack of ugly people on TV shouldn’t make you insecure. If your getting your life views from The OC or Friends you have bigger problems to worry about than the insecurities they give you.
Ps. I realize this is terribly random ramblings. Sorry.

BOTTOM LINE:
" Degenerated" shows happen in USA because there is too much moral oppresion by others. Those are two very unhealthy extremes.
When both parties will stop extremism, then it will be time to watch somewthing funny and simple on TV.

I think that the whole idea that only skinny people are on television is overrated and probably inaccurate for the most part. If you turn on a sitcom, your always going to have overweight people on it. I do agree that television has become more slanted towards thin, attractive looking people, but can you blame them? Who wants to watch some real heavy and unattractive people on tv? Shows are never going to get any ratings from that, unless it is Roseanne or someone famous like that. I personally dont have any prejudice towards any type of person, but would probably much rather watch attractive people. America is known as the fattest country in the world, and I think television is trying to help promote a more healthy lifestyle and get people to realize that although we should accept who we are, getting in shape is a good thing to do!

TV definitely influences people to be what is portrayed on television and causes those people to change their way of lives just to fit that. You dont see many average looking people on tv nowadays. Its all the extremely goodlooking people with great bodies. They are now advertising diet pills on tv. They even have shows where people get full reconstructive surgery of the face and bodies. so of course tv influences people to look a certain way.

Massive Corporate Movement

Their's certainly a massive corporate movement to bring people into selective surgery. Tonight on the news - they were reporting on how many more teenagers were opting for breast surgery in the U. S. . Why ? Are they all going to be strippers ! Frequently all nipple sensation is lost during surgery and often these artificial breast cause colds and other infections. This leads to these implants having to be removed and re-implanted at a later date. I wonder how their feel about walking around with one giant breast at some future date. It's all pretty self destructive ! Considering many of these surgeries turn out less than desirable and many of them have led to death and other illnesses and suffering - it would appear that most governments will put corporate profit over the welfare of their own citizens.
As far as subliminal messages. Well it certainly a possible factor or component but I think most mass movements in all industrialized countries are probably factors of governmental direction through electronic warfare to escalate corporate proceeds or political objectives. ( My Site )

I don't think that a public media could be held responsible as a sole benefactor to such irrational behavior. As a matter of fact the massive commercialism to recruit children into child psychiatry has begone to create a complete opposite effect on the public here in America. Parents are rapidly removing their children from Depression and ADD and ADHD medicine and it has only led to a substantial amount of questioning of the industries creditability and objectives.
