im in my late teens, and extremely passionate about music.
i can read notes, unfortunately not very quickly.
the thing is, id like to play the violin.
learning how to play the violin is something ive also wanted to do, and unfortunately something ive put off too many times.
im ready now. im courageous enough to come face to face with my passion
any tips for a newbie?
should i get violin prior to taking lessons?
can i learn how to play the violin by myselF?
how much does an average violin cost?
am i too late to learn how to play?
thanks guys and gals

I don't think there's any such thing as a 'right age'. I suppose it helps if you don't have age-induced arthritis but apart from that, any age is probably good. I started when I was eleven, although as I'd already been playing the piano for about 6 years at that time my general music comprehension was already pretty good.
I haven't had lessons for the last three years, for mostly financial reasons, and my 'cello has been broken (the foot's cracked and I can't attach the G-string properly) for about a year now. It's scummy.... although I hear tell that there's an instrument library somewhere near my little part of the world, where I can take out a 'cello for free. Hmm...we'll see.

Well, I'm a 'cellist not a violinist, so I'm afraid i can't offer you any informatin on violins. Except:
- don't buy one before you start getting lessons. You can generally hire (or if you have a teacher with a spare few knocking about, borrow) violins fairly easily I believe, and when you're just starting it really doesn't matter too much about the quality of the instrument itself. Once you've had a go at the violin, and you're still sure it's the instrument you want to go for, then you can think about getting your own, and looking into the different makes etc., all of which have a substantially different sound when played by anyone with a little competance.
Good luck and I hope your passion for music endures.
Linds.

yes, i really do hope my passion for music endures.
hey, i wonder... what is the right age to learn to play a stringed instrument like the cello or violin? How bout you? When did you learn to play the cello?

Follow your desire (no matter what your age is) and you will do great things!
As for the violin... fractional size instruments make it possible for even small children to begin a journey in music. As a teenager you are most likely ready for a full-size instrument. Since you are just starting out, I would reccomend renting an instrument. There are many music stores that have rental programs. Be sure to get a quality instrument. I am the webmaster for one of the leading makers of violins: Eastman Strings. There is a lot of great information you can learn from their website, http://www.eastmanstrings.com, and I reccomend the visit.
Best of luck to you!

Hello "perturbed reject"...
I agree you should find a teacher to take lessons from. As with any art, you first must learn to walk before you can run.
So what do you mean by mush? Mush is what my cereal is turning into but I don't see how that applies to what I posted... (Nice name by the way, ha ha)

thanks so much for your reply, guys and gals. haha... yah, i wondered what "mush!" meant. it's a really cute word.
im determined to start taking violin lessons within this year. :-) ive read through websites saying that the violin is made up only four chords, so isn't that supposed to be easy? yup, i do know the violin is a hard instrument to learn, you're right. I might get frustrated feeling superman and taking it out on my own.
ive also read a simplified version of stradivarius's life. ive heard the violins he made costs millions, is this true?
Thank you!

arty4ever, i just went throught the Eastman site. Very interesting. I once saw a movie of a violin maker hiding himself in the woods to find the perfect kind of wood to make his violins.
aah... my passion for the violin has just been reconfirmed. i really love the drama behind the violin. It's very efficient in telling stories. Most of all, I like its sincerity towards expressing emotions through music.
Haha... someday I'll play the violin like VanessaMae
