hey,
i see you would like to volunteer. i have volunteered with the organization "kidsworldwide" and would like to tell you that i had a great experience and would reccomend it to others.
kidsworldwide is a non-profit web-organization that connects volunteers with projects that help kids. there are projects in ghana, cameroon, tanzania, the phillipines, jamacia.....
i taught at a primary school in ghana in the summer and loved it. i'm going back in a few weeks to do it again and be more involved wiht the organization this time.
check out the website www.kidsworldwide.org to look into the organization and specific projects.
good luck finding something for you!

Levelling the playing field

I have just returned from 3 months working with kidsworldwide in Ghana. Whilst I had a really good time volunteering with the kids I have serious reservations about the organisation. I don't mean this to in any way bias somebody's decision but I think if you are going to pay out to an organisation you should know other peoples experiences.
Kidsworldwide state that your money is paid directly to the director so you know where it is going when in fact $50 goes straight to the volunteer coordinator (not publicised). I wonder how many volunteer coordinators do the advertising.
We thought the volunteer coordinator would match us with a suitable project and arrange our pickup at the airport and add us to the email list so we could communicate with past volunteers. In fact we were promised an IT based project which is why we quit our jobs and there were no computers though we were promised 40. We were sent very little background info and were left stranded in Accra airport in the middle of the night with no local currency.
I did however have a brilliant time at the project with the children although I feel kids worldwide had nothing to do with anything positive regarding my experience as some other volunteers would agree. A lot of the projects are available to see directly online without the use of an intermediate organisation. In our case we would have been better cutting out the middle man as once in Africa they offer no protection or security.

hey,
just so you know, i am coordinating for ejura as well as otehr responsibilities. i take no money for what i do. so, while some people find it moral to take money from these organizations, some of us also don't. please don't make generalizations.
