The serious side of an unserious business
August 16, 2004 - 12:11 PM

It all depends on how you look at it. Chat rooms to some people where created for fun and so they go into it and get all the fun that they can get. They look for those that want to share in their fun and ignore those that they consider boring. This is the "unserious" side of the chat facility. Again, the creator of the chat facility may include some facilities that could attract some people and do not attract others. Hence, this will also determine the audience to the chat room. On the other hand, others make head for a chat room that is more business-like and "serious" in nature. Like the one we use here at TIG. The reason may diver from wanting to solicit for funds, team members, information etc. But then for both the "serious" chat rooms and "unserious" chat rooms - one thing is sure. There is constant exchange of information and constant communication between participate. The last beauty of it is that it is live and it is relatively cheap!

Hello Dear Effiong,

Many thanks for your response . Your valuble words entitled: "The serious side of an unserious business" has shown your deep sight . I think there are common elements and similar evaluation. Your point of view that says : "it all depends on how we look at this subject" is interesting and general . Also I can add two elements :
1- people dont know exactly each other and then allow themslves to talk extreemly free and without any shame or like this.
2-chatters dont observe others` face and their feeling which usually shows behind wall ! Also it produce many things .

Again thanks and wait for other views.

Hello there Shafagh!

Just want to add my bit. i recently wondered into the world of chat rooms after joining TIG. the one thing i enjoy is corresponding with people world wide, total strangers and yet have so much in common. the bonus is, even though we were taught not talk to strangers from childhood, it doesn't hurt if we can't see them! chat rooms are also a good way to bring out issues that affect us either they are serious, light hearted or fun like Ime said. hope i've been helpful. all the best with the paper.

Hello Dear Sandra

You are the second helpful visitor ! I appreciate your attention . As you and effiong mentioned I think chat is like a knife with sharp blade in hand of a surgeon or thief . Thanks for your sincere and kind response . Thanks god to find good friends here in TIG.

As effyzzi explained, it realy depends on your aim in entering the chat rooms. Some people just use them for pure entertainment where they spend some time chatting with the opposite sex, and some use them for consultation, seeking knowledge or exchanging ideas and thoughts in various subjects. But I think most people - especially among youth - use them for entertainment.

I personally prefer forums to chat rooms because they give you more time to organize your thoughts and ideas before responding compared to having to respond almost instantly in chat rooms.
