[Poll] Youth and news ... Which influences which?
August 10, 2004 - 10:31 AM

I remember a few years ago being approached by an idealistic young woman who proudly proclaimed that at her university ... and at universities everywhere ... youth were changing the world by changing public opinion. It was reflected in the news on TV she said. So I asked her about Tienanmen (Tienanment?) Square in China. It hadn't been long before that Chinese youth bravely faced the tanks and troops of the Chinese military there, only to be massacred. I remembered that there were many campus marches in the U.S. supporting those courageous rebel students in China ... but only for as long as they were on the nightly TV newscasts. When mainstream media lost interest, so did the youth of our nation. Sadly, many of the forgotten young protesters in China were then gathered up and imprisoned or worse. On the other hand ... youthful idealism propelled Howard Dean into the political spotlight in the U.S. presidential primary elections earlier this year. But was that really the influence of youth on the media, or a result of the internet (a new form of media) facilitating youthful idealism? After you answer I invite you to visit http://www.iei.net/~pwagner/brazilhome.htm to look for a gallery where you can view two very short, but exciting, web-films.
