Meaningful Student Involvement

What is meaningful student involvement?

For three years I've been researching, writing, talking and working for meaningful student involvement. I've talked to teachers and students around the US and heard a lot of ideas, practices, and beliefs. Now I want to know what YOU think about how students should be involved and engaged in the classroom, on the playground, in the school board room, and throughout the community.

What is meaningful student involvement, in any grade level, at any kind of school?

Well that's quite a range - from the school to the community. But they can be integrated, and I think that that may be one way students will be more encouraged to get involved. I know that if there's an activity promoted in school I'd be more likely to go than if I heard it on a community website or post-up, because I'd know that some people from my school were going & could maybe arrange to go with some friends. So trying to get students involved with activities at a smaller level, like the school, may help to co-ordinate activities, even at a bigger scale, like a national level competition.

HOW should students get involved in the classroom - I think this is basically just participating isn't it? And that depends on how the teacher encourages the student to learn. Getting the class involved in different activities, on a local or global level would be cool. For ex. my investing teacher had us involved in a stock market competition on the 'net, which many students enjoyed.
