G8 and Digital Divide
June 26, 2002 - 03:36 AM

I am actually in Calgary right now, about 80 km from where the G8 summit is occurring. Given the tight security around the summit site, most protests are being held here -- about 5 blocks from the condo I'm staying at.

Overall, I've been disappointed at the degree to which the digital divide has fallen out of the media attention on the summit. On the summit agenda, it was initially listed as one of the 4 key Millennium Summit review areas (along with HIV, primary education, and debt reduction) for the G8 meeting. But despite the fact that the summit secretariat keeps sending out press releases about the Digital Opportunities Taskforce (aka DOTforce) wrap up report, no one seems to be broadcasting these stories. So, you'll have to read them for yourself at http://www.g8.gc.ca/aboutdivide-e.asp and http://www.dotforce.org.

It's kind of sad because the DOTforce plan of action was created through a massive consultative effort over the last few years. Last spring, the Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP) even commissioned input from young people to include in their recommendations to the DOTforce (http://www.iisd.org/networks/youthdotforce.asp). Ultimately, it was too little, too late.... But that experience did help to mobilize the GKP and its donor members to look more seriously at funding youth input to other ICT processes in a more proactive way.
