How can I set up a non-profit in the U.S.?

I have an extensive website about Brazil that encourages people to travel there and volunteer time and effort, or to provide financial support to social programs there, or to bring needed items or even just to help create more awareness of the need to help and of specific programs that I profile. My question is, how can I get set up as a non-profit in the U.S.? Idealist.org doesn't want to take me on as a member because I'm not a non-profit. I want to post volunteer opportunities there (I help connect many would be volunteers with opportunities in Bahia). If you can help please contact me at pwagner@iei.net.
