There has been approximately 4.3 million Children death due to AIDS Since the on set of the AIDS pandemic in the late 70’s. 15.6 million Children under the age of 15 have lost one or both of their parents to AIDS. By December 2000 nearly 1.4 million children were living with HIV/AIDS, most of these did not know their HIV/AIDS status.
Normally HIV/AIDS positive children are subjected to discrimination at school, home and the community. In most situations these children are living under the custody of close relatives and do not mind the way they are treated after all they are sick and dyeing soon, so why waste the limited resources to them. These children deserve and have a right to equal and fare treatment with other children, so it is the responsibility of every one that these too get justice done to them.
In many situations children with HIV/AIDS are subjected to HIV testing with or without pre and post counseling, and no result of their test is given to them. This keeps them wondering why they are living a different kind of life from other children. Is this kind of management meant for children? At the end of this no explanation is give for the cause of their chronic illness only to be coerced to take lots of drugs daily most of which target different opportunistic infection. Many children end up wondering why they have to take all those drugs. Why them to safe with chronic diseases? What wrong did they do to deserve the suffering? In situations were children get a chance to receive Anti retroviral treatment no explanation is given for subjecting them to that kind life long treatment. Further more, these children end up in children homes for AIDS children thus being isolated from other children. The outcomes of testing should be given to children, it is important to counsel and explain the cause and the importance of life long treatment because they need this information. So it the role of guardians and doctors to explain to the child as soon as they are able to understand the reality of life, this is at about the age of seven. This will increase adherence to treatment and make them more responsible for they actions.
