Bush and the Oil Company
June 13, 2002 - 06:46 AM

Conserving our natural gases and preventing air pollution is so crucial in these times, but w/ a president who is friends w/ the oil company, it almost seems hopeless.

I have earlier heard rumors about Hamid Karzai being previously employed by some US oil company. I believed it to just be socialist conspiracy theories.(I really couldn't believe that the US would be THAT obvious) and since I had heard nothing about this from other media, I just let it go.. but now having read the links Nick referred to, I start asking myself again: Whoa, is that Really what it was all about? Oil?
(even tho the sources include "World Socialist Web Site&quotwink

Surely makes me want to investigate this matter further. Because, well, Norway is one of the NATO partners who has sent military personell to Afghanistan.

Excuse me if my allergy towards strong politically centered opinions sounds too extreme, but I can't stand media which uses quite a lot of subjectivity in their reporting. This be some liberal newspaper, or any socialist website..

In either case, I would like to get more information about Karzai and any links he could have with the US government.

Oh, and this about Taliban first being supported by the US government and then suddenly being the evil itself on earth, isn't that just historical facts?

I am convinced that Oil has a Lot to do with the alleged "war against terrorism", (esp. the Afghanistan mission "Enduring Freedom&quotwink, but I am still unsure HOW much.

smile

interesting topic!

Interesting.

For starters - excellent topic.

Firstly, it must be made known that I do not know the figures for the amount Oil Companies and their affiliates contribute to political campaigns in the United States. Im guessing they would be pretty substantial, but I cannot make any assumptions.

It was quite clear George Bush has the idea that mining for oil in Alaska is a brilliant one. I cannot stress enough, it isnt. For one, does anyone remember The Exxon Valdez?

Now, no matter how high they put the pipeline above the ground (allowing for animals to graze under it) mining for oil in Alaska is a bad idea, as it WILL impact on the environment. Disasters are envitable, we are humans, humans make mistakes.

And George Bush is human too, he just makes BIGGER mistakes. In a way, the size of authority he has, the bigger the disaster.

I wouldnt *really* worry about how far under the covers the United States government is with the oil companies. At the end of the day, the President and oil companies both come from generations of people looking after their own interests through a medium that is both explosively dangerous for the environment, and one where a failure to provide their service can lead to crippling a nations industry.

What I think CAN be done is to ensure oil companies and the oil industry in general invests in alternative energy development and implementation. At the end of the day, oil is eventually going to run out, and who knows when the next oil crisis in the mid-east comes around. So what oil companies should be doing is following BP and some other minor players in developing and promoting alternative sources for energy, and for cleaner fuel.

I think the key is compromise.

Also, oil alone isnt the biggest contributer to Carbon Dioxide. Humans are.

Mars anyone?

War on Terrorism... for oil?
June 16, 2002 - 09:20 AM

There was a rather amazing article about the War on Terrorism in the Good Weekend magazine that comes with the Sydney Morning Herald Saturday edition earlier this year. I can't find it, but the following linked articles basically reflect what it (a reputable magazine) said.

http://www.kstatecollegian.com/stories/012802/opi_white.shtml

http://www.corpwatch.org/news/PND.jsp?articleid=1149

The basic thrust is that both the new President of Afghanistan and the US Envoy to Afghanistan are former consultants to a huge American oil company which donated to Bush's campaign, that has been trying to build an oil pipeline across Afghanistan, but the Taliban (despite being wined and dined in Texas) refused to give the go ahead, thus... ah... they were gotten rid of and replaced by someone... more compliant... like an employee of the company!

I think Bush must have got this idea from James Bond!

I wonder if it could possibly be true? And where does this kind of thing end? Ah yes, "the world is not enough"...
