I have watched the show "family guy" along with others like it. I agree that it is wrong to treat people differently or badly because of race, gender, religion, or origin. Its sad how people find it amuzing to make fun or out down people in the media. What is even sadder is that most dont even realize that this is happening. They are completely oblivious to the presence of racism. I would like to thank you for bringing it out in the open.

What I disagree with is your use of the "Family Guy" quotes. I think you're having trouble differentiating between comical humour and racist undertones. The media is so liberal today, that any racist nonsense can't be tolerated. I think the use of jokes such as this is a positive thing for the ending of racism, assuming one can perceive an ending. If people just quit complaining about racism, maybe people will realize thats its already being decreased, especially in the Western Hemisphere. Just quit complaining!!

Chandy, I notice you are from Canada did/does Canada practice Segaragation in the last 100 years other than the English/French Language problem? Can I tell You three how Man got his Colors? I know all 3 of you have heard of Lucy, Eve's third cousin, she died at about 15 a virgin it would seem she had had no offspring because her pelvise had not spread from child bearing but there was enough DNA to do a Mitacondrial DNA Search of the Indiganouse Tribes of the World Who Are Left and It was established that EVE really Was All of Our Mother. Now do you want to know why some of Us have dark skin and some have liter skin? Let's start with what is called black, it is a shade of brown in all cases, take red yellow and blue and mix them you get gray/brown now move North out of Sub-Sahara Africa and try to find Red and Yellow Vegetables during the Ice Ages and you body will change colors so it can take Vitamin D and Vitamin C and a Little more Sun light than You once could because Your body remove a little Blue from your Melanan and some of You stayed in the Ice and it was favorible to the hunt if you did not show up against the Ice so so the ones with the liter shin lived and were able to have liter offspring and then you got across the Baring Straits and headed South and it only took 10000 years for You to conquer both of those continents but You had already Left your Blue in Africa so all You could do is Leave the Yellow out of your Melinin for a SUN Screen,. gene

Interesting discussion! But please note that it is not limited to just color. The dominant/ruling communities have always tried to humuliate the subjugated communities through cultural propaganda. There should be an intensive struggle against this.

RE: Family Guy...
Usually newscasts have subtlely (and from time to time explicitly) racist overtones to them so the Family Guy is using their newscast as a satire.
RE: Canada's history as a racist nation...
Canada had work camps that Asian immigrents were sent to as well as a head tax on Asian immigrents. Many people are unaware of this part of Canada's history -- even Canadians. Infrastructure like the Canadian National Railway (which was the primary means for transporting goods from coast to coast for decades and a consequently a cornerstone in Canada's economy) was built by immigrents (including but not limited to Asians and blacks).

Zvezdy,
I am increasingly disturbed from your posts about how racism doesn't exist and that people of colour should just stop complaning. I really feel that you should take a step back and look at where your discomfort is coming from. Racism does exist, and as far as I am concerned it is one of the most obvious, visable forms of hierarchy in society.
Africa, the darkest continent, is by far the farthest driven into poverty, slavery, and sickness. I know that in my own city, Toronto, the rich neighborhoods are predominantly WHITE and the poor neighborhoods are predominantly people of colour. I remember that when I first started learning about racism I was equally as defensive as you. I see this defensiveness in my male friends when I try to talk about sexism. I saw this defensiveness in myself when my friends would challange me for saying that bad things were "gay".
It is sad to see people who are so dedicated to justice and peace be so defensive about their own privlidge. It seems that you do a lot of really cool projects, and it is so cool that you're a vegan.... RESPECT for that.
BUT, racism does exist, and yes it is getting better, but we have a long long long long long way to go.
sol,
elle.

Wow, funny that my lifestyle has nothing to do with my feelings about racism.
You seem to put yourself on a pedestal by assuming that racism is something that's overpowering our cultural society. Are you labeling my feelings as weak? Inaccurate?
I don't get defensive about racism in ways that you might believe. I just have a tough time believing that some minority should have special priveledges because he or she was born a certain colour, or comes from a different background. The beauty of freedom is that we all have a chance to acheive something with what we make for ourselves, and those that fall back can't use the excuse of race or culture to define their failure.
People are so selfish. Why can't everyone just care about something greater than themselves. That's what this whole thing is about. Selfishness. If people could just turn the other cheek once in a while, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Zvezdy, what you're missing is that this freedom that you speak of isn't everyone's reality. There are systemic barriers that exist in the lives of marginalized people that prevent them from experiencing the "American Dream" as it seems you may have (from your attitude). Sure, some people get lucky and break through that but it's unfortunately the rare exception instead of the rule.
Turning the other cheek is a wonderful idea. But at somepoint, when a person is unable to be themselves and participate in their community because of something so arbitrary as the pigmentation of their skin, it becomes very hard to sit complacently.
Fortunately, however, there have been experiences where rights have been returned (for example the Civil Rights movement in the US). During the Civil Rights movement, advances were made (though the problem still wasn't solved) but were the people who stood up and took action to just sit and take the oppression they were faced with, as you suggest, nothing would have happened.
Are you sure it's better to just turn the other cheek and let the perpetual abuse continue?

I agree with your statement. Racism does exist, and it is still a very large problem...
but not with African Americans in the US.
At times I find it utterly arrogant and selfish for people in the US (of both white and African American backgrounds) to put the kind of energy and expense into bringing about a "more perfect" state of racial equality in the US when the "problems" that we have here with race are trivial when compared to the *real* racial problems elsewhere in the world. We should be ashamed.
What about the genocide right now going on in the Sudan? What about the ongoing murder because of race (and religion) in the Middle East? What about the killing (up until recently) of the Kurdish peoples of Northern Iraq? The list goes on and on. In many places in this world there are people for whom their race is basically a death sentence...and means that members of their families are very likely to be murdered...and tortured....and raped....and mutilated....and starved to death.
...and in the US what are we wasting time and energy on? The "sensitivity" of a satirical racial comment on a cartoon that was designed to poke fun at the media's obsession with this now trivial problem. We fight and argue and dedicate our lives to fighting about the rights of African Americans to get special rights when being considered for acceptance into an Ivy League University...where elsewhere the race of people means that they will never be able to step foot into *any* University...or College...or in many cases a school at all....or live long enough to be able to try to *move* somewhere where they could go to school...or be able to attend school with limbs needed to write with.
Who are we kidding?
qnp says, "It is sad to see people who are so dedicated to justice and peace be so defensive about their own privlidge. "
In the US, who is privlidged? Those who are afforded special legal rights because of their race. Race has ceased to be a civil rights issue...instead, it has become an excuse. For all people of all races, things like being able to work through school and college and succeed and things like being able to land a good job and work hard enough to be recognized for good work and be promoted *ARE REALLY DIFFICULT*. This is a fact for all people. However, "racism" has now given groups like African Americans and women (yes, I am sorry, it is also true of "sexism" an excuse for what happens when they don't perform. Instead of saying "I didn't get (a good grade, into the college that I wanted, to pass that class, the job interview, the job I interviewed for, the promotion, the raise) because my efforts fell short and I didn't work as hard as I should have", they say "I am a victim of inequality, I am a victim of racism / sexism, it is not my fault or my problem, I can resist the temptation to better myself and instead fight for the "cause"". The perpetuation of this "cause" gives them false hope (that they *are* entitled to what they didn't get because they earned it and therefore are good enough), it demotivates them ("I don't need to work any harder for the issue at hand, instead I need to complain and fight for the "equality" cause...not the "better myself" cause." , it removes the most important value for success from them - accountability (because now someone else...society...is accountable for their success and not them), and it removes the most important virtue - individual identity (now, their success is not based on "the individual", but it is based on the aggregated success of "their group" .
This has the following effects that further exasperate the problem: 1 - The individual has a false sense of ability because the "excuse" of racism / sexism confirms for them that they are no longer the problem but society is, 2 - Those who are not members of the "minority" become better suited for high performance and develop increased ability because instead of stopping a the point of failure and chalking it up as "someone else's fault", they are forced to look into the mirror and sharpen the saw of their own skills and capabilities. In the end, then, when two people are pitted against one another...one with status as a minority and one without, the one most likely to succeed is the non - minority. This is not because they are fundamentally more intelligent or more capable or because they have some "racial" superiority...it is simply because they have had no excuses for their own past failures and, as a result, have been more likely to overcome them.
The result? Once again, another minority is passed over in favor of a non - minority (who happened to be more capable). So, the belief by the minority candidate that he / she has been discriminated against is reinforced. This further serves to drive a greater wedge between the two groups and exacerbates the problem even more.
This, by the way, has a second - order effect. Those in the non - minority class observe the reactions and complaints by those in the minority and they develop a "legitimate" racial discrimination. They see, time after time, that instead of working as hard as the non - minority and being accountable for their own failures that minorities work less hard to achieve and blame it on anything but themselves. Unfortunately, this leads to "third generation" pre - judging which has absolutely nothing to do with race...but the perpetuation of "race problems" which has ceased serving minorities and now actually is working against them.
So why do we let it continue? Money and power! Huge industries have been developed and sustained to fight for this cause and to consult to minorities and non - minorities, government and corporations alike regarding how to ensure that "equity" is maintained...this ensuring that the separation (and their paychecks) are maintained. Also, politicans are using minorities as pawns to maintain power. As long as there exists a "race" (and again, I don't just mean race) issue, these politicians will garner the support of those who believe that they are victims and stay in power. Of course, while in power they will be sure to maintain the fight...which maintains the problem.
What is the solution? The first is easy...end it. "Managing" race needs to be erased from policies and attitudes alike. Don't get me wrong, laws need to be put in place to ensure that *NOBODY* can use race (or sex) as the basis for *ANY* decision...in either direction for *ANY* rights. In other words, we need to eliminate race from the discussion and punish those who attempt to benefit from either side. We need to create a perfectly level playing field...this means no special "slope" on the side of the "college acceptance" playing field for those who are minorities. This means the elimination of "the protection of special rights" from political agendas. This means forcing us all to work equally hard to have the same exact chance at likely only learning that we lost and therefore have no one else to blame. In time, then, the best people (independent of race) will always be successful...and there will be no special treatment of whites and men (because they will not be allowed to better themselves any more in times of failure because they will be competing against those who will now instead of blaming someone else also be bettering themselves).
Most importantly, though, we need to look outside of our borders and help those who *really* don't understand racial equality and really *are* racist. By doing this, we will begin to see how far we really have come...how similar we really are, how stupid (and destructive) this fight really is, and where there really *is* a problem and where help really is needed.
So to everyone else, I applaud Zvezdy. She has stepped up and spoken out on a topic that she is certain to be nearly crucified for because it is not politically correct. She is looking through the eyes of a young person who is uncorrupted by the society, politicans, media, and corporations at large who benefit from the illusion of this problem being believed. She understands the simplicity of human competiton and the psychology of people who are provided with a crutch in the compeition.
She understands that the greatest form of racism is continuing to believe in it and create artifical protections against it and therefore poisoning the ambition of those who who are subject to it. This is the same thing that someone from her state once called (I believe) "The soft discrimination of low expectation".
I, too, am likely to be labelled...but that's OK. I have thick skin, and I have been exposed to enough of it to no longer be able to chalk it up to "anecdote" any more. I know the truth...and that's all that I need.
I also know that we are privlidged beyond our wildest dreams...so much that we need to create our own trivial problems to make life interresting. I'll close with a great quote from Dennis Miller about this concept (in this case, it related to the "elite" issue of animal rights in light of human rights...as Americans, we are represented by the wealthy liberal yuppies, American racism and discrimination is represented by the fur, the paint is (I suppose) debate about discrimination and idiotic, feel good solutions to it like affirmative action and "diversity training", and the rest of the world's problems with *REAL* racism which are life and death issues are represented by the homeless person).
OK, long set up...here's the quote (not verbatim).
"I'm really getting sick and tired of the 'yuppie cocktail party liberal eliteists' who act like they are passionate about an important cause that is meaningless. These are the same people who would step right over a fellow human being lying in the street in their own feces and urine to run to throw paint on someone who is wearing 'mink'."
As Americans, we need to grow up...racism is just another product that too many of us are addicted to. We need to quit it now and put those who are millionaires and polticians because of it out of business. No other action will do more to help the minorities in our country out and give us more time to focus on other things that really matter...like millions of people dying because of their race...this year alone.
God Bless

But what abuse are you speaking of? The humor of Family Guy?? I'm sorry, but if a person isn't intelligent enough to look the other way when it comes to the media, I don't know what I should believe!
Here's the reality. People aren't fair, nor do they care much about eachother.
I'm not saying that people who are born poor shouldn't receive a handout from the government because they couldn't help the circumstances of their birth. I'm not saying that a person unable to pay for college shouldn't receive a grant from the school.
What I'm saying is that most of the minorities and people who complain about racial targeting don't have a right to be complaining. The "American Dream", is not something handed to you on a plate. You are born with whatever you have, and you make the most of it. I'm 16 years old. I havent even BEGUN to live my free life. But I'll tell you one thing... I won't be on national television in a civil lawsuit against the minorities in the alief district targeting the limited number of white students in their highschools.
I won't be complaining about small business owners in the city of houston refusing to appoint white teens in the fast food business because of 'minority need'. And yes, I've experienced this.
It's selfish and its wrong to complain about someone else's words effecting your performance as a human being. Bottom line.
Believe me. If you can't find a job in one place, you can find it in another. If you're not accepted in a community, you can always move. People will not change for someone who they think of as lower, or smaller. It's up to the person, whether or not they want to fight back against a lost cause, or something that's relatively irrelevant to how one spends his or her life.
There are people in the world who endure physical pain every day---emotional pain. And this isn't racism. Who's handing it out to them? Whose complaining about neighbors in third world countries, not even being able to feed their children? This isn't racism. Racism is an invisible-silent. And it's not lethal.
No one has a right to be complaining.
