How do you define tolerance?
February 11, 2010 - 04:04 PM
|
|
In an increasingly globalizing world, we often hear words like tolerance, diversity, equity, multiculturalism and inclusiveness. These words apart from being used as a common political jargon are truly notions that every society should embrace and put in practice.
What is your definition of tolerance? And how do you think we as individuals should practice it in our daily lives?

Well, I'm not so good in defining such concepts. But for me tolerance is the opposite of judging. It's to accept the person in front of you and his/her liberty (to think, to choose, to prefer this to that...).
And supporting him/her. Instead of telling him/her what he/she has to do.
I like to understand the way people think to accept them. Why does he/she like that and not this. It's just curiosity and no judgement.
But maybe, this is not being tolerant... And you ?

Tolerance is when you allow others to express themselves and be themselves. You do not judge them for what they do. It is living and co-existing with others in peace.

Whatever community we live in, odds are it is multicultural to some extent - consisting of people from varied culture, ethnic background, social background etc. Each group brings with them their cultural and social values, languages, ideology and such. Tolerance to me therefore means the ability to coexist peacefully and in harmony with one another.
I think the concept of tolerance is well understood in general and more or less the same the world over. Tolerance is what I would like to term “universal virtue”. Tolerance is “best practice” i.e. a value that ensures best value and mutual benefit for all.
I think the larger issue is not how we define tolerance but how do we achieve tolerance?
Perhaps it is best exhibited by many of the most successful multinational organizations and best of all by the United Nations which is a symbol of diversity, equity, multiculturalism and inclusiveness. I strongly believe that by pursuing and implementing similar practices, values and beliefs, communities can be equally successful.
We know the solutions, the challenge lies in the implementation.

Tolerence is to be able to co-exist with others peacefully inspite of the diversity. In a more developed sense, it is being able to accept and love others inspite of the differences. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICEA :)

There are times and situations when lack of tolerance is a virtue like - against injustice, corruption, bad policies, troublesome people etc.

I think tolerance is to accept people's differences. When you are tolerant you don't judge people for their differences and you don't try to impose your beliefs or your way of life if you don't agree with theirs.
You accept their differences as they are.

Here is a simplified way:
Tolerance is a Measure. Like a Yard-Stick, Ruler(inches, centimeters, etc...)
There are many ways people define Tolerance but in each they use another word such as Patience which sets the Distance being measured by the amount one can "Tolerate".
Everyone has a different Tolerance to the many Measurable situations. Tolerance actually has nothing to do with Patience. Being Patient is Being as Patient as the Person can Tolerate and that is a Measurement of how people as onlookers, the object of the Patience, or the person being Patient having a Perception Opinion as to how MUCH Patience... etc...
If you read to this point you are a Tolerant... actually you might be as I Am.
I Am. a G.I.ANT.
A "G.I.ANT" is a TALLER-ANT(Tolerant)

I Am. A Taller-ANT.
I Am. A G.I.ANT and I am back
I have come searching for Jack.
Jack LIED and said I was Dead.
I will grind his bones to make my bread.
There was no beanstalk.
That was just a Fairy's Tale.
I have been patient long enough.
>Tolerance<.

To me tolerance means realizing that not everyone thinks the way you do or believes in what you do and respecting their right to have their own free will.
As human beings, we're naturally judgmental creatures, and anyone says that they don't ever judge are lying. We all do. But tolerance comes in when you judge inside your head and then say, "Well, I may think it's wrong, but it's their prerogative to think as they wish."
