Cell Phones will help get people online?
June 10, 2002 - 03:51 AM

I read an article about a year ago about how (I think) Romania had more cell phones then land line phones.

It made me think about how that with the new internet enabled cell phones it will make the cell phone the first cheaply affordable internet ready appliance for some developing countries.

Although these services are about a year off in North America, they will become cheaper in a few years, and I think it will allow people in other countries who cannot afford a PC to share information through the internet, and so on.

yes, the development of the cell phone industry/market is quite interesting. in general, wireless connecting to the net is a big part of the future of connecting people in developing countries / "emerging markets" to the net.

my only concern is software.. browsing the net with the phone is ok, but either then people need to use citrix-/thin clients-based solutions or they would have to do without heavy database software &etc.

In North America, we don't really have any of the new services yet (still with the yucky WAP), so I can't really say how they will work out.

However, the newer stuff like BREW by Qualcomm and i-mode by NTT Docomo, is supposed to make cell phone browsing much easier and much more enjoyable. Then the WAP we have now, and for there to be web surfing in developing countries, it would have to be very user friendly, and would probably be based off of one of these kind of services.

In Bangaldesh there is an interesting expeiment where loans have been given to women living in remote villages to buy cell phones. These are then used by the community to access telecommunication services otherwise not available in these regions

It is interesting to see the difference that only a few years have made, I’m sitting at the moment on my veranda on farm on a remote hill top 17km from the capital of Australia, Canberra and I am connected at 1.8Mbs using a mobile phone card (HSDPA) link on my laptop. Oh how the techno changes. :-)

This is very true.currently in kenya,we already have affordable phones to the youths that are accessible to the internet. And i believe ttwo years from now even the majority of the poor will have access to such mobile devices, the only problem we currently have is that a majority of the poor in developing countries are illetrate and do not understand the meaning of being connected to the internet,so as much as these devices might be easily affordable, they will not be of any use to such groups of people with no access to computer literacy education

True what a few years of technology can do ; Mobile computing is said to be growing three times faster than the desktop computing; What needs to be done is the development of technologies that the illiterate people can use without difficult , for instance images which communicate informationhttp://www.takingitglobal.org/images/connections/db/emotes/wink.gif
wink,

Yes, because of the techonolgy now, it has come a long way from before. Now more and more people have cellphones and now most people are starting to buy cell phones like the blackberry which can connect others to the internet, and now apple has come out with a universal phone gps, mp3, cellphone with internet, and more. So you can say the techonolgy has come a long way.
