"A global economy, energized by technological change and unprecedented flows of people and money, collapses in the wake of a terrorist attack .... The year is 1914."

Thanks for sharing

Thanks for posting the site address- very interesting, I'm going to enjoy watching it later...

On the specific quote... I don't agree that you can compare 1914 to now. Sure the world might have had unprecedented flows of people and money, but the flows are 1000000000 X greater now... and all at the push of a button.

Also, maybe what this show does not explore is the non-economic sides of globalisation. The fact that now, it is much more all-pervasive culturally, politically.

It is interesting to think how a terrorist attack acted as an excuse for the World (or Europe) to have a massive war it had been building up weapons for many years previously. Maybe a comparison can be made there with today?

good point Nick.

Heard someone say recently; "history doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme"

a note on Brents Comment.

I dont think History repeats itself. Not to sure on it rhyming either.

I just think life is played out to a certain rhythm. And a rhythm is but a mere regularly recurring pattern of activity.

Bearing on that, life seems to have a pulse of its, and history with all its research and observance is like a record of anomalies in the beat.

But what are the symptoms of a heart attack?

well, i read somewhere (cant find references, sorry!) that the US government had already laid out plans for a "war on terrorism" before sept. 11th.. this, together with the "what did Bush know" hysteria, can be quite scary to think about. hmm, and what is this about some CIA personell visiting Bin Laden in Saudi Arabia the summer of 2001 - even tho Bin Laden was wanted for the bombings of some US embassy?

anyway, rumors.. i don't know how to get more facts..

what I think might change the world politics a LOT is not the terrorist attack itself, but how this attack is being retaliated. just like in 1914..

Another scary fact.

I read somewhere that Al Qaeda and the Northern Alliance forces were fighting it out trench warfare style too.

Just another freaky co-inky-dink? I think not!

History!!!
June 19, 2002 - 12:01 PM

I will try watching this later...though on the issue of history i agree with Predattack...history is just a part of the rhythm of life, some beats may sound the same but not all the time is that true...Accusation tend to fly around especially when it comes to an issue like these attacks, the findings ar egetting more incrminating...but then let this sequence play its self out...when accusing fingers are pointed a proverb in my culture says, at least four others are directed to the accuser...lets apply to all aspects even as we work together to make the Information society a better one, serching ourselves and knowing our motives...wow...did i write this? while on this, nick i agree that 1914 might be similar, but this is sure different!!! They in 1914 would probabaly freak out at the pace of our day!!!
