The effect of poverty on the environment

We all know that there are various problems that our world suffers through in terms of the environment. We also have given thought to the origin of most of these problems' origins; but, have we ever given thought to the whole chain that links all kinds of problems in the world?
If it weren't for poverty, there would be no excess trash, no unsanitary habits would have developed, etc.
Of course, the clear choice for a solution would be to eliminate poverty first; but, how? What kind of effects does poverty have on your environment? What kind of solution do you offer? How can you help the environment in this way?
