People keep plugging in to the Net...
How are these people preserving their cultural identity while their online?
I can go days talking to someone online before finding out they live on the other side of the planet. Does that mean the Net erases culture?
I don't interact with Americans, Africans, Asians, or even people of a particular religion.
I interact with individuals....
Have you conformed?

Socialization is the essence of human beings. It is so important to communicate and if one finds it easier to communicate with a stranger their cultural background isn't important. The net has allowed a new generation another vehicle in which to grow forward and speak one universal language.

The great thing about the internet and culture is that one's culture can be preserved through technology. Throughout the ages, one's culture has always been passed down from one generation to another through word of mouth. If someone has not parents/grandparents to learn from, that person's culture is lost. Bring in the internet where you have websites created by people who are proud of their cultural background with tons of sites dedicated to their rich heritage.
The joy of it all is that the internet brings all this together so that in chat rooms and discussion boards, one can share views and opinions between people of different backgrounds without judging these ideas based on looks etc etc.
The internet truly is remarkable in opening one's eyes by talking and sharing experiences with people from other countries and backgrounds. The need to have an identity when chatting over the internet is just part of the many ways in how one can preserve his/her culture.

When I'm on the net, interacting with any individual, culture doesn't matter. Infact, ethnicities or cultures are rarely discussed. Suddenly you're not american or african or asian or arab anymore. You're just someone with whom someone else has common thoughts on something.
Its hard to preserve culture unless and until you meet.
A decision that makes culture all too tangible is when embarking on a project/marriage/ or visiting the otehr person. Its only then that you come across someone else's culture on the net.
