Teachers can? be racist too?
May 13, 2004 - 12:29 PM

Ok, at my school it is very multi-cultural and sometimes hen someone gets a bad mark some of the students complain that the teacher is being racist toward them. Has this ever been experienced with any of you? Or do you think that it's just an excuse

Hi,
My school is also multicultural but I would say that teachers are sometimes racist. I do not mean that all teacher are racist. But some teachers are racist. I have done a research on racism and I found that 55% of Canadians are somehow racist. Therefore I would say that some teachers are racist but they do not show it more often and it is not just an excuse.

I don't think teachers in Canada are racists at all. When students complain that the teacher is a racist, they are over exaggerating the word "racist" yet they just mean to say "favourism" among the students. But teachers in other countries may practice racism in schools.

Once I read that Education can't be imparcial.
I read It in a Paulo Freire book, and I believe in that.
When you are not imparcial that means that someone is going to disagree...
I do Believe that being racist is a terrible things, but we have to remember that even when Teacher are payed to only give classes, they are people and they Have the right to have a different vision.
What they cannot do is to let rece and anyother things make the student fells Decreased (i think that is written like that.. sorry if there is any mistake..)

Racist or not, I'm sure many members of the faculty would notice some sort of hatred coming from that particular teacher. These days it's so very easy for a student, or any person, to claim that their own downfall was the effect from someone else's racist views or actions.

Although it could easily be mistaken for the child being selfish and giving excuses, I do believe that, if so accused--the given teacher should be questioned, and/or monitored in class--and the administration should take some sort of action if the teacher seems to have racist tendencies regarding the treatment of his/her students.

SUch things should never be taken lightly, because if--in fact-- the student WAS a victim of racism in the classroom, his/her general education could be majorly scarred because of something that could have been prevented.

But, on the other hand, it's just too easy an excuse--and the student shouldn't go around spreading their own hatred if he/she knows it was his/her own failure.

What I noticed in high school wasn't so much racism as "groupism." Honor students and athletes were treated as golden-chilred by certain teachers and administrators while regular or problem children (like myself) were often overlooked and slipped through the cracks...or in isolated cases outright disdained. I'm sure there are racial problems though. If a teacher at my school in Texas was racist they wouldn't have lasted long. We had majority white/black/mexican with some Asian mostly Vietnamese. We had a pretty mixed faculty too come to think of it. My History teacher (Mexican) showed obvious favoritism to atheletes and it disgusted me and many others.

I think among every "group" of people, there are some who don't follow the general belief or hold the same values as the group as a whole. I mean, there are corrupt teachers, racist, sexist, useless (or whatever) teachers - but then there are the same in CEOs, church officials, the rich, the poor, the-average.

SHOULD it be there? No - but what can we do about it? Educate people and don't let it impede your future/dreams (corny I know...) - if something is amiss, other people are sure to have noticed and you need to stand up to be counted.

I think (because of upbringing, media, whatever), there are certain discriminations that lie very deep in our "subconscious" - we all have to try very hard to get rid of them and even before that, we have to realise we have them. Sometimes that's hard to take when you THINK you are a fair person.

Regarding prejudices in schools, everyone has had their own experiences. One person might say that teachers are not prejudiced because they have never felt prejudice on them from their teachers, or they just realise that their teachers are just not prejudiced! Some other people say their teacher/s are prejudiced because they have felt an injustice toward them from their teachers. Some may have felt true prejudice from their teachers, others in fact may have just thought they did, maybe the teacher was not in a good mood then. But that's no excuse I know. And we're not talking Freud psychology here, I think that a bigger percentage of students feel a prejudice and do not say their teacher is prejudiced just because they got a bad grade.

Freire did write about educators' inability to be unbiased. He also said that teachers should never pretend to be, strive to be, or act as if they are unbiased either. That is dishonest and unethical, and robs students of the reality of human life: we are judgmental beings with the critical capacity to constantly examine, deconstruct, reexamine, and rebuild the world around us. That is a good thing, and we should seek to do that, always.

Racism in the United States is made real through systematic and culture segregation, as well as personal attitudes. Those are all visible in public systems, like schools. Schools in communities of color consistently perform poorer than schools in white neighborhoods. Here in Washington state, where I live, students of color- including American Indian, African American, and Hispanic students- graduate at half the rate of whites. Those realities are similar across the country.

But I think a larger problem here has to do with classism. That's another discussion, I guess.

off course teachers can be racist they are not more or less human then you and i are.

anyway teacher can be anything like any other human being.

Still i is very bad if teachers are racists. they have a position that they can be hurt people very much. My p.e. teacher hated overweoghted children and only 12 years after leaving highsachool i realized sporting can be fun.
So he ruined my pleasure sports for years. And it showes again the power teacher have.

Good teachers

Teachers are racists like some other people, but when tou choose a career as a teacher you should consider if you will do good a good job. As a racist you will not forfill your job-discription. Teacher should give every pupil a fair and respectful consideration. How can this happen when you pre-judge your pupils ?
But it is also important to seperate between how you think and how you act. Almost everyone in this world thinks less of some people than others, but not that many act on these thoughts. This is the difference between a good and a bad teacher. The teachers who can seperate person from case are good, the once who can't suck !
And all in all there are a lot more sucky ones out there than good ones.....By the way, I'm happy for you, I'm glad that you now like PA
