[Poll] Religion at work
May 6, 2004 - 05:47 AM

Do you think people face problems at work because of their religion? Is religion one of the reasons why people don't get accepted for jobs? Why do you think people are not allowed to wear their traditional clothes at work and have to wear formal clothes? Is this fair? This is something that can affect Canada's multicultural community. What do you think?

Well, I don't really know if workers face problems at work because of their religion because I'm only a student. I think that there isn't any problems because I think that workers are afraid of showing what their religion is to avoid any comments.

It is not fair that people are discriminated at work for wearing religious clothes or doing religious things. sad I think that people are discriminating people because of what they've heard and what they've learned. I don't think that people discriminate people because of their own ideas. People don't just wake up one day and say "Oh, today I'm going to discriminate that Jewish person at work!". It is all someone's big idea and passed it around.

I have a reply to what both b'crazy and helenfu wrote.

B-crazy:
As you said, people don't really like to show their religion etc because they want to avoid comments. That is a very great issue. The problem is that, this is a multcultural country so why don't people show their own religion? Why do they want to hide it or why are they not proud of it? This maybe because other people don't try to understand other religions and their believes. They think other religions are wierd which can cause people to follow differnt beliefs.

Helenfu:
You have a good point. People don't just pick someone at work and start discriminating them. There is a particular reason. What can be some possible reasons? What do you think?

Do you think the number of problems at work due to religion have decreased? Do you think all the companies allow people from all the religions to work at their office? When someone is being interviewed, do you think they are asked what religion they are of?

I don't think they are going to ask what religion they are of because it doesn't matter. It only matters if that person is suitable for the job.

You are right. It doesn't really matter what religion a person is of. However, a few companies in canada so ask than question. Even though it is only 1% of the companies. This is not fair at all. Anyways, do you think religion problems at work has devreased than before (in canada)? I think so. However, I want to know what you people think then i will give my opinion.

The religion matters.
If you send your resume through fax, the first thing they will see is you last name. If they think you are of the religion that they don't want their staff to be of, Pop goes your resume into the recylcing bin.

You do have a good point. However, how many companies do you think judge you based on your religion? How many out 100? What do you think?

Sometimes people do reject their jobs because of their religion. People make fun of each other causing others to feel bad.

In Canada, some companies offer to pay extra more wages on Eid day(it is a Muslim holiday) if he or she agrees to come to work on the Holiday. But on Christmas or Easter Days, the workplace shuts down completely without any offers of extra wages. So I think somehow decreased, but there is still religious problems at some workplaces.

As i cannot talk about others i can only talk about myself and partially about needs, that Futurism has towards community. I already made it clear how Loyality is important. also at work. From work comes all good, that benefits the community, which makes it stronger. So we are told to work well, as thats ment as a duty. No time to waste. What i demand in my own factory:

- Alcohol usage at wokr is forbidden, also nobody is allowed to come to work drunk.

- Smoking is allowed only in for that purpose selected rooms

- No cursing or foul language

- Good manners (men to women, etc)

- Do what are you told to do, and not otherwise. There are others doing other things.

- If there is a problem you MUST report it - to me directly, there is no fear of backlash.

So thats it. Comments? Anybody wanting to copy? Copy then.

Ave Futuria

BrianK, you have brought up a very good point about cults. So you are trying to say religious cults can affect people's jobs?

Kaiser- Im just confused about what you wrote? Is that related to people having problems at work sue to religion?

Yes, generally speaking cults are more disruptive than "mainstream" religions like Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism or Hindu. Many cults call for their members to take so much time away from work also to attend mind-control type meetings. I know for a fact that Church of Christ-ers make their members spend as much time as possible in "church" activity at the expense of family, work, school (many cultists drop out) and friends. Normal religions don't have nearly so many restrictions and that's why I don't think they are as disruptive. I've worked many jobs (too many!) and I can't even recall one instance of religion causing any trouble. I do remember some good discussions however. Sometimes with atheists! I guess work is a good place for people to talk because you have to behave or you'll risk getting fired!
