Culture in TV-Realistic or Not?
May 6, 2004 - 10:19 AM

We all watch television, but have we really paid attention to it? Has television realistically portrayed culture in TV? Has there ever been a time when you've encountered an unrealistic cultural way? Or even a stereotype from cultures? If so, this is the thread for you. Feel free to post anything you've come across with culture and television.

I watch a lot of t.v but I've never seen culture being portrayed. It's mostly verbal. It'll be, "I'm a ..." and others would be just telling people. They don't dress the part or even sound like they are even in that cultur.

Culture does not show much on tv. On top of that, there is the lack of multiculturism as well.

i think culture is always being portrayed on television. culture is not just religion or ritual or clothing stlye. culture is our whole way of thinking, our world view. it guides our thoughts in a certain direction, it help shapes our values and morals. society and culture are extremely intertwined. yet at the same time, trying to be faithfull to your own cultural upbringing while living in a society that is opposite to that is quite diifcult. i think on television, culture is on constant display. we just al take for granted our own culture and sometimes are oblivious to the fact that what we are watching is a product of our culture. i do however think that when in a television show or movie, one culture tries to depict another culture, sterotypes are used and misused. it isd often what one culture thinks another culture is all about. we see everything through our own eyes and our own culture so in that was it is biased. i am not saying that it is done in a malicious way nor am i saying it is done in a mean way. i am just saying that to portay "another" culture, or to even understand "another" culture, we need to look through their eyes and not our own.

I support this particular quote and we now need to personally justify this.

I think saying that you never see culture on television is, sorry if this sounds harsh, but I think it's pretty ignorant. Culture is simply a way of life. You can't open your eyes without seeing it. It's the clothes you wear, the language you speak, the food you eat. It's everything that is distinct to any certain group of people.

As to whether or not culture is portrayed realistically on tv, yes and no. There are some shows that know what they are doing. They do their homework and make sure they know what's going on before puting something on tv. But for the most part, tv is not realistic. I think the media is probably the biggest reason for all those stereotypes. They make it seem like all gay men are extremely feminine, blacks are "ghetto", models are stupid, asians are computer nerds. The list goes on and on.

I personally am sick of those stereotypes. I wish there were more people in showbusiness that were actually good at their job. Then maybe we could see what different cultures were actually like.
