Sexism in the school
May 6, 2004 - 09:49 AM

In school, people can be left out of games because of your gender. I know that in my school when we play team games i never get passed the ball, all the guys hog the ball and dont pass to the girls. Just because were girls doesnt mean that were bad athletes. What do you think

Even though i never been left out, but i see people been left out becuase of their gender.Like in playing soocer, rarely anybody shoose a girl.So the teacher normally got to be on the girls side.

Sexism in Schools
May 10, 2004 - 02:55 AM

About your message...I think it is very true. In most gym classes many girls do not get passed the ball and things like that because the guys don't pass it. All in all I think that their is a fair amount of sexism in schools (especially in gym). I say this because most of my friends and I have experienced this in almost every grade.

I agree with everyone that says there is sexism in school. I think that boys think that boys are good in sports and girls aren't. If we had gym and it's co-ed, the boys will always pass it to the boys. Just because I'm a girl, doesn't mean that I'm not good in sport.

This is the most convincing topic. Other topics are confusing because they have two answers. This topic has only one- that there is sexism at school. Boys think only they can do something and girls can't. I like that example about gym class. Also sometimes, boys think they are the best and can do anything. However, there are girls that think boys can't or shouldn't do certain things. I think this steoreotyping. Anyways, am i getting off-track? Is stereotyping related to sexism?

Even tough i have'nt experienced sexism in school but i have seen that usually they dont pick girls for basket ball or soccer teams and i have also seen boys not being letting into cooking classes or knitting clubs.

I don't agree with most of you in case of Canada. Each school has a girls team and a boys team. Each school has girls and boys both in their team, but in the case of Asian countries I would say there is a lot of sexism in schools. Most of the schools have only boys or only girls in it. Even there are no girls teams in games like soccer, football etc.

khanjan-yes there are separate girls and boys teams but were talking about in gym class its co-ed. Whenever were playing in gym class we dont get passed the ball. I think that is unfair because we can be just as good as them in class

Well i think that people(girls mostly) shouldnt be left out from team games because u never know they can be as good as the guys but because the guys think that they r better they dont let us play. I think that this can realte a little in my class i sit next to these 2 guys but one of them is kinda nice when he makes joke they r jokes but the other guy is plain mean. he says mean things to me like that he is better at everything than me and he is only been sitting with me for a month that not enough to know a perosn very well and to know that they do not anything. i think this is a bad thing and it needs to stop our teacher helps and now we have to take action.

what's up everyone? ye i have to agree that there is sexism in schools without a doubt.....I'm a guy and I see it happening...I guess if we really think about, it narrows down to how our society places both girls and boys into categories from the time we're born u know? For example: with young children, boys are expected to play with action figures and girls are expected to play with barbies....and i guess this carries onto when we grown up and most ppl think that boys shud stick to the sports and not girls...it's not rite but that's what a lot of ppl think....and maybe that's why guyz don't pass the ball or whatever to girls when playing team games......i'm not really sure, this is just what i think. What do you ppl think?

Sexism (Not only in the gym)
May 19, 2004 - 02:26 AM

I think there is a lot of sexism in schools, but not only in games. Sometimes there's sexism in the classroom. Like if there was a "group" project there could be sexism in between both the boys and the girls. Like the either the boys could take over the whole project and totally ignore the girls or the girls could take over and not let the boys do anything.

I think your right. Many people get left out of games and activities because of your gender. Like clubs for instance. The paper club. Say the boss of the club is a girl, and a boy wants to join, but she does not let him because of his gender. I think that is really, really unfair.

I don't think so. Its not sexism. (I am talking about the passing of the ball.) The ball is usually passed to the good players. If there is a good female player then the ball is passed to the girl and if there is a good male player then the ball is passed to the guy. I have seen that girls in the gym class don't even run while some of them are even better at the sport than the guys. There is no use passing the ball to the girl who does not even run. You just cannot sit there and say pass the ball. You need to play properly. Take an example, Meesha is the best girl basketball player in my class and she always gets the ball while take some girl who is not at all good at games, she never gets the ball. You need to be good at a game to get the ball and if you think that you are good, then prove it. When I was new in my class, I was never passed the ball, at the time I proved that I am good at the sports. So, I don't think the guys are being sexist by not passing the ball to the girls, I think that guys are not passing the ball to the girls who are bad at sports but they are passing the ball to the girls who are good at sports. Even, the guys who are not good at sports do not get the ball and the guys who are good at sports get the ball.
So, if you think you are good, then prove it and then the ball will be passsed to you.
