Is teaching a noble profession?
April 25, 2001 - 03:06 AM

One of the major issues in education today is that teaching is no longer seem as a noble profession. Teachers aren't really respected by students or parents, and society tends to view them as baby-sitters, instead of educators. I'm really wondering why this whole mentality began? Is it because all you require is a B.A and 2 years of teacher's college? Probably not, there are a lot of uneducated (brilliant) millionaires in the dom.com workd who are really respected. Is it because they have chosen to take strike action when they aren't happy about something? More likely, although still far fetched, as teachers in other countries have not striked and are still lacking the respect they deserve. Is it because teachers don't work hard? Well, just as in all other professions, there are the bad ones.....the really bad ones who give a bad name to all teachers, although I'm sure this isn't the issue as there are a ton of great teachers too. So, what could it be? Why aren't teachers respected? I'm beginning to think it is because of the fact that parents can't discipline their kids anymore, and when the teachers try to do the disciplining, the parents don't support them!! They stick up for the kid. So then the kid feels stronger than the teacher and you have a major problem! Does this make any sense?

It isn't fair to generalize when it comes to teachers.
I think it depends on the student as well. Some teachers just don't get it, but then there are some students who are just the same.
To be fair it is up to the individual to capitalize on the situation. There will always be problems with those who don't come through for you in life. You have to learn how to deal with it. If teachers are baby sitting in high school, the students should be embarassed.
The youth in the western world are spoiled and don't appreciate the value of education sometimes. They think they know it all. Some teachers think they know it all.

Welcome to the real world teachers and students.
No body knows it all.
Let's learn together. We need teachers and students to respect each other.
We need the unions to stop the strikes.
