Topics!!
May 8, 2002 - 10:57 AM

Finally! The ideas came.....well actual 1 BIG idea-

Each day either all day ling, or from like, 6pm-9pm we could have generilized debates.........

-Monday: Politics Now. Find some one who shares your view, and perhaps you will start something new

- Tuesday: Fashion Talks. Swap ideas w/ other members, from your toes to your nose

Well you see where it would go. We could also have a free day, where you pick the topic when you find some1 to debate it with or whatever. Maybe we could even form a club or something and make it easier to find someone from your region.
OK... I am just throwing ideas out there..so what do you think??

the only way . . .

Firstly - your talent for rhyming is definitely something you should explore.

I must say however chats are VERY had to organise. Having something kept to a routine, as in - every monday is a chat on politics makes it a tad simpler.

There are a few things that would need to be taken into consideration.

1) Timezone; no talking about politics in the oceania region when the oceania people are all asleep!

2) Agenda; some areas have natural flow patterns of discussion, something as volatile as the middle-east conflict does not, and hence someone needs to moderate the real-time discussion, and have the capacity to move things on from a point that resembles the audience bashing its head again the wall.

There are other things - but mostly that is how it seems to me.

Thoughts?

good idea

This sounds like a good idea to me. Are you thinking of running it in real time on the TiG Chat or just like a discussion board?

Either would be cool! I'd even stay up to participate smile

I am willing to help out if needed - it will be fun.

It's a Start
May 12, 2002 - 09:54 AM

Thankssmile
I was chatting w/ martin and he didn't like the idea of fashion, but also suggested 1 thing I really liked- News-We would pick an international topic. I don't understand all of what you were saying in the second thingy. But to your 1st thingy, we could get someone on the other side of the world and coodinate w/ them via email and have at least 2 different time zone disscusions or maybe we could divide into continent or have North and South America, Europe and Asia, Australia and Oceania, and The middle East and Africa.....how does that sound. Well I don't know how that would work.
Do you want me to post something to see how many people would be interested in doing debates and helping out??

Great!!
May 16, 2002 - 07:37 AM

The suggestions you made are wonderful and I am happy that there are multiple people interested in this idea that are willing to help.
The idea of the news/ current event topics was geared toward issues like the Middle East and other stuff like that. Perhaps we could do debates AND something to do w/ sharing ideas and help from (as you said) people who know what they are talking about.
By the way, what does dltq stand for??

im up for it

good idea to do something like this - it would work if you have a couple of people who for instance have prepared something for the chat, and if the chat session is properly advertised! no use if its like "every monday at 2 pm EST there is X" - well I think rather one should start with a chat and then make it an event, not just some routine. The event could be that x and y person/TIG celebrity will also be participating (ref. the leadership focus on TIG), or that the topic is of something to which most, if not all active TIG people could identify itself with. Current events / news - ok... but it is very broad, and perhaps not that useful for TIG members who can instead go to #cnn on irc to get it. (don't get me wrong, news discussion IS important at TIG as well) but what about having a chat about for instance "how to find funding for your idea".

I think such a topic, with introductions by some people with experience in this field, and perhaps some background documents/articles people could read before the chat, would be very good.

oh and the timezone issue.. well, of course this is an issue, but I think that nevertheless it would be good to have a session which could work for a couple of hundred of people within these timezones. we cannot please all at the same time, and if the chat session gets positive attention AND it gets good participation, one could hold another session maybe for another main timezones area, or hold the next Topic Chat in another timezone area. (Not doing every chat just in the prime time for the Canada gang wink)

i think this is a good idea and if you need my assistance with something, plese let me know.

well
May 20, 2002 - 03:37 AM

hey smile

well one of the things about being an activist is to do things, and not necessarily with waiting for others all the time. if you want to host an event on a topic like the Middle East on the TIG chatroom, why not? Who is stopping you? wink (Well the TIG administrators might think that one should consult them about something like this, but hey this post of yours (original one) has been around for some days and none of the admins has responded to it, so I guess they are busy with other things.)

I will help out with the chat if I can (which mostly likely will be the case). So, are you up to it? smile It's a great way to getting some experience in arranging something.
And the chat room is mostly empty anyway, so I think that its hard to really lose something by giving it a shot. I will help with promoting the event.

I say let's hold a chat about the current situation in the middle east, or it could be about the Children's Rights (specifically children's and youth's participation in civil society / democracy), or it could be about .. whatever you choose.

So PixieStix, I challenge you to come with Your suggestion for a topic for this first event, and then you could be head of the event planning group. I will join you in this team, we will invite others, and then we will take some weeks of preparing an event, and then we will finally set the date, set the topic and perhaps publish in an update a document which gives some outline of the issues we would like to see raised at the event.

smile

hehe.

what dltq means? I wrote an update which explained some, it is here:

OK
May 20, 2002 - 08:38 AM

yes... i do tend to procrastinatesmile

anyway, let's plan on doing (something like):
War on Terrorism
-what is a terrorist
-who should get involved w/stopping them (country/nation affected,world-wide effort, etc)
-how effective are terrorists (in th US, we say that we are still strong, yet are economy is completely ruined)

Commitments to help (?)
-if the US stays in Afganistan, how come Israel shouldn't
-how much should an outside country get involved
-(this kinda seemes off topic, but)the idea of a global flag to unite the globe

let's do it this sat.May 25 perhaps at like 2:00 or 3:00 pm EST...or is that too soon???

we could also have some rules that basically say that we go around and each person shares their opinionon whatever goes w/ the outline.....then go back and anyone can add additional comments....continue and at the end have people share anything else they feel needs to be addressed.

we can send out a mass mail thing or post something that says:

rules, date/time,topic and that every1 needs to come and stay open to other people's ideas and hopefuuly go away w/ new knowledge and understanding.

also every1 should need to RSVP so we know if there are too many people that we need to divide it up or not enough people. you and/ or i could be a mediator to help ever1 should a problem arouse and also both be able to share our opinion.

what would we do if some1 types slow and doesn't have time to say what they want to say when they want to say??

ginasmile

War On Terrorism chat
May 21, 2002 - 12:13 PM

yes, good idea, let us have a chat session on the "War on Terrorism". what does the others think about this? I do however think that the chat date is a bit too early.. lets do it end of may, beginning of june at the earliest. this way you can properly prepare the event big grin

i think also its important to note that this is, so far, not an Official TIG chat session, as it is not being arranged by the TIG gurus. but I still think that we should do it, and promote it as much as possible. but important is also to give some good, fairly objective background info on this issue.

yes, i have heard about "everybody loves raymond" but I have never seen it, and if anybody reminds me of this series again as soon as they hear my name I will scream big grin

raymond was/is a fairly normal french/english name from the middle ages, and well, .. anyway. yes, we have this series here in scandinavia too smile

great
May 22, 2002 - 09:59 AM

looks like a great idea...

1. write to martin - martin@takingitglobal.org regarding promoting the chat in the next tig newsletter (maybe it will be for a later chat... not sure when the next newsletter is due)

2. it will be a bit of an experiment with the chat room -- in my experience doing chats with large numbers of people in it haven't really worked -- the translation system is really cool but it does get in the way a bit if you don't need it. anyway, can only try

3. send a very short summary appropriate for a "Spotlight" on the front page of the site to Michael Furdyk...

Cheers
Nick

i got a TIG messege from PixieStix today where she said she couldn't make it on sunday due to a travel, and she suggested to postpone the chat session. fair enough, i sponsor that suggestion.

PixieStix, the call is yours, when shall we have it? could you then also please contact martin and michael about the date so that the rest of TIG can be notified about the event somehow? I can also do it if you don't have the time, but first we need the new date winkMonday the U.S. President Bush, while in France, linked the D-day to the current war on terror.

Today, Bush is attending a summit marking the foundation of the NATO-Russia Council, which will also deal with more practical issues such as the terrorist threat towards peacekeepers on the Balkans.

I have made an update in which I will collect the different links to information, as well as some background information for this chat session. The update will thus continuously be updated/edited.
