Homosexuals in school - yay or nay?

I myself have been to two schools in my life , so I could not speak for more than that. So I will ask you guys to help me speak for a larger population. So , my main point is , do you think that it is alright to have gays and lesbians as part of our schools. I have heard that there is a new school opening up somewhere in New York specially for gays. This is wonderful that there are places just for them , but is it necesary? Has it come down to this , that we must send some one to another school because of their orientation? I do not see anything that seperates them from us , other than the gender of people that they like. In other words , their brains do not work differently than anyone else. So how do you feel about these issues that come up in schools all around the world?

Homosexual people should have to go to different schools.
My college is a Roman Catholic college - and we have several people who are openly homosexual and you do see gay couples kissing in corridors the same as you see hetro couples. We have some teachers who are openly gay - it doesn't make a difference what peoples sexual orientation is.
Yes you do get some gay people who are 'stuck-up tossers' as a friend of mine once said - but you also get straight people who are the same.
Anybody with any sense about them embraces a multicultural society - gay people are just another part of that.
Where I live (Manchester) a area of the city centre is called the 'Gay Village' and is the focus for most of the gay bars in the area. I'm not gay but I have been there with friends and always had a great time.
Yeah, first time i was a bit unnevered by being in a room with men staring at me - but as one of my gay friends explained - it's a complement, not an insult. Even if some starts trying to flirt you can just tell them that your straight and they will stop - thats how i met one of my friends.
Gay people have no problem with us being around them so why can't we be as tolerant in return.

I've just re-read my message - my poor typing has let me down yet again - the first line of my message is meant to say that I DON'T think homosexuals should have to go to different schools.
Good, now that's sorted - sorry for any confusion.

Hi There!
I think that we shouldn't have to send them in different schools because they are human beings too, the only difference is that they are gay/lesbein, separating them is being sexist. I don't have a problem having them in my school.
Thanks, I hope it helps!

Lone-Wolf I was very disturbed about u saying that homosexuals should go to different schools, but what i think that your second reply where you said:
'the first line of my message is meant to say that I DON'T think homosexuals should have to go to different schools.'
i think that what you did was just to save yourself from the humility and pain that other people said

Keep your opinions to yourself

in all honesty i don't care what you think.
It was a typing error - that's why i corrected it with a new message rather than changing the old one - so whateverdude's message made sense.
Read the rest of the message - i go out with friends to the gay bars in my town - i choose to spend my time with gay people so why wouldn't i want them in schools and colleges with me.
SO whatever you think keep to yourself - there've been plenty of boards covering the topic of gay people - go and read what i've put on them too.

lil-dizzy-devil i think that gays and lesbains should be aloud to be in a normal school. they shouldnt have to change schools because there homosexual. i mean thats a very stupid reason, for beating the c**p out of someone is a good reason, but they being kicked out of school just because they like the same sex? thats just WRONG!

hey hey,
the reason they're probably starting a "gay school" in NYC is because queer youth are marginalized and face oppression everyday. being in an environment that is queer positive means that they can be themselves without fear or violence. queer youth have some of the highest rates of suicide and depression. just because they go to a "gay school" doesn't mean that they will escape oppression, but it does offer them some comfort. we have a queer high school in toronto called the triangle program:
http://schools.tdsb.on.ca/triangle/

my roomate (holding the sign on the left) went there and he loved it. gay schools aren't perfect... they can still have sexism, racism, transphobia, biphobia, etc. these are all things that exist everywhere and we have to work through and challenge this hate everyday! i think that gay schools exist for the same reason that "all girl" schools exist. marginalized peoples need to stick together to figure all this stuff out and share experiences to stay strong. this doesn't mean cutting ourselves off from society. it means creating spaces where our voices are heard and our experiences are validated.
elle.

I was thinking - i know the first time i read this i thought that this was about gay people being forced to go to seperate schools - if they are choosing then i don't suppose there is a problem.
When you go to uni - you live in halls and are given the option of being in a mixed block or in a single gender block - if people are given a choice then i can't see the problem.

Have your parents been treated differently because of color or race or if they were gay?
I really don't know because I have never heard about this school opening in New York. Also I dont think gay or lesbian people need different school because there are kids in my school who are gay or lesbian. I think because they don't actually don't want to mention it.

Everyone deserves the same respect.

People have always said that everyone is different because we are all unique. If we are all unique then gay people and lesbians are also. They deserve to be treated the same way as us and the same respect. However youths can be influenced by them which sometimes can be negative and positive. I have to mention that the modern day today is very cruel and not understanding. We have to stop being so negative about everything that seems abnormal.

yah there are probably many gay people in your school. acording to the kinsey survey 10% of the population is straight, 10% gay, and everyone else is somewhere in between.
i don't know about that statement that queer kids are bad influences. many queer kids go through a lot of bad stuff because they are shunned by their friends and family. some become depressed, some turn to drugs, some end up on the street. if my friends and family shunned me just for loving someone that they didn't think i was suposed to i would probably go nuts too!!! i think that straight people are way more of a bad influence because they make too many babies. damn breaders!

I live in Pune India and its probably the most open city in the country coz of the number of students here but still most of the gays/lesbians are closet ones . everybody has got a very television comedy sorta concept of homos here . very will and grace coz i dont think even 2 percent of the people know anybody with same sex preferences. As early as school probably none
