It depends which movies. Mainstream cinema-shown movies? Yes. Alternative movies? It depends. Quite often, yes, LGBT characters are shown in a negative light which I think is unfair because it only further supports homophobia in today's culture.

I’d like to suggest that this is the same for most marginalised minority groups in society, and seeing that most of out main stream media content is generated in the USA, then what ever is not in fashion in the USA tends to be propagated across the world.

In South Africa, gay & lesbian characters are usually 'comic-relief' characters with no real substance.

Yes. I do. It's soo wrong. Who cares if you're a lesbian, gay, bi, or straight. It's not like some people wanted to be gay...it's just they way God wanted it to be...no one can try to change that. Discrimination = a tradgic suicide story. Think about it.

Same in America. Movies that treat it in a serious way (read: Brokeback Mountain) attract massive amounts of controversy and criticism from people like the charming person you quoted.

well, in the last two weeks a four-part drama series about a man in the closet whose family want him to fix him with a woman was pulled off air on the eleventh hour. apparently to be recut after some sort of consultations (not sure with who). But this also happened in the light of another four-parter that was pulled off air half way through - this involved the initiation/circumcision custom the Xhosa people of South Afrika...

Yes, And no they shouldnt be. Most of the time i see them as comic reliefs and i wish the Media would show them living their normal lives so that Society can see that gay people are just that, PEOPLE.

I am sorry to say that it is the people who say that gay/lesbian/bi sexual people should be seen negitively that is the cause of the problem. Society as a whole seems to think that to be homosexual is to be bad, the taboo on the subject has gone back for many years.

Yet may I point out that it is not that gays or straights are projected as bad in movies, it depends on the movie really. Take the movie rent, it is all about new york city life and the acceptance and prejudice of other taboos.

On the other hand you have movies such as broke back mountain, which is a true story about two cowboys in the day who secretly were lovers, but had to hide it because of the way homosexuality is viewed. In the end, as a spoiler, one gets attacked and killed because he is "found out".

Sexual orientation doesnt make you bad nor does it make you good for that matter. It is a matter of your life, whether chosen or not. The anciet romans, egyptians, mideval era people, and even some back in those biblical days were freely accepted as being gay, casually and as a lifestyle. So why are we having such a hard time accepting it now?

Not really because it's not a new thing hence people have accepted it.I find it to be normal.

For the most part, yes. But it is improving and that's a very good thing. Alternative media is more likely to have dynamic and fleshed out queer characters, but increasingly more and more mainstream medias are doing the same ^_^

I think that when someone makes a decision he or she should be prepared to bear the consequences. It is not easy but only him or her made that decision. Gay and Lesbians have made a wrong decision and they must be prepared to face the consequences. If they cant then they should change and go back to being more sexually civilised.
Have a good sexual day
