Hello Guys!
A lot of schools are now using online classes. What do you think are the benefits of this kind of learning system?
If you were to choose between the usual way of learning from the online learning, what would you prefer? Justify your choice.
Feel free to give your thoughts about this topic.
Good luck! *

The benefits of this kind of learning system is that it provokes the students to get inclined into using ICT's. Thus, there skills in using ICT's will improve. It's actually a great way of promoting the utilization of ICT's.
But, if I were to choose the best method between the old-fashioned way(inside the classroom) from the online learning system(online classes), I would still prefer the old one. This is because I still believe that students learn more when they actually see each other face-to-face with the teacher. With that, there will be more interaction and better understanding.

I cannot deny the advantages of online classes over the old ones, but still I prefer the old style. There are 2 reasons for this:
1. Interaction:
The interaction among students and teachers is what influences my preference the most. This one is actually obvious to all of us. What we mainly do in class is the interaction between teachers and students, and between students themselves. Teachers give students the lectures, instructions,... Students discuss matters, solving things together and coming up with solutions,...
Some may say all of this can be done via the Internet, with the help of Webcam and Voice chat, but how could these tools be as efficient as the tools which we are born with - our eyes, our ears, our mouths, our hands,...? And well, think of a class of 30, how would that class do discussions effortlessly through the Internet? That can be done, but again, not as efficient as doing discussions in class.
2. Distraction:
I myself experience firsthand the distraction when working online, not to mention something that need serious attention like learning.
There are many kinds of distraction. Some of those I experienced:
- Music (Once, though working on an essay, I wanted to listen to music, and eventually I couldn't draw my attention to the essay)
- The "being connected" feeling. (I felt it's my second nature to sign in the Y!Messenger, staying Invisible though I have nothing to do with it. And then, after working for like 30mins, I felt like tired and find somebody on my contact list to chat... you know the result :|)
- Wow, it's facebook. I'm actually the fan of "Facebook turns my 30-min homework into a 2-hr one". Social networks are kinda addictive you know :|
In conclusion, I think online classes should be the ones that we cannot find anywhere, for example Internet Marketing in Vietnam (there are classes in universities only.)

Second Hung Tan!
If I may add, I would like to emphasize the possibility of cheating and other illegal actions in online classes. Since it's online, you can not be so sure that you are talking exactly to the right students. It is very easy for the students to ask their friends or acquitances to replace their attendance in online classes.
The online classes system also very susceptible to the act of hacking.
And lastly, there may be more technical problems that may occur on online classes system, compared to the conventional classes.
So, I do definitely vote for the conventional one!

Totally agree, Stephanie.
Considering all our points, I think online classes should only the place to share resource, to upload lectures, videos and provide them to students who really are eager to learn. (though it may not function as "class", well yeah, but I think that's the only way "online classes" will work.)

I think there have been some really good points here, that have been well considered.
I think that a combination of the two are best, This conference is to improve education with the use of technology not replace it.
Combining an online workspace to the normal classroom is a great way for students to hearness technology in their day to day lives, relying on it to complete their work. But also to not let students become withdrawn, as social interaction is key to student development.
This is a really good discussion! Very interested in what everyone is saying, as currently there is alot of talk about digitising and transfering to online classrooms in New Zealand.

That's two good points there. I agree with you. I have had had experiences with online classes (or at least, the nearest thing to online classes) and it was pretty hard. A teacher should really be there to assist you and help you if you have questions. With online classes, you destroy your eyes for sitting on the computer for a long time. You tend to do other things when you're in front of the computer.
So, well, I prefer classes inside the classroom. But doing online quizzes and puzzles is fun though, and such activities that are parts of the class should be done online occasionally. Teehee~

I have submitted my vote in the poll that I prefer classes inside of classroom.
I second Hung on the various disadvantages of independent online learning, because firstly my experience seems to echo what he had mentioned(distractions), and I also believe that an online conference with a class of 30, though on the optimistic side it MAY be possible, it would be very inefficient in letting students absorb the essential knowledge.
However, this does not mean online learning does not have its advantages.
1) It allows indefinite repeats, such that students can learn at their own comfortable pace, and be less likely to feel lost, unlike in conventional classes where teachers have to take into consideration the well-being of the whole class.
2)Interactivity of online lessons may interest students.
3) Online quizzes gives some students(like me) the courage to make mistakes and hence, attain clarity in any conceptual error one may encounter, with the fact that mistakes are not declared to others(may be perceived as embarassment for some students).
Again, conventional classes in classrooms also has its advantages. The teacher-student interaction during class is likely effective in bringing discussions to a broader perspective, given that the class of students can share whatever doubts or opinions they have and the teacher can clarify with the whole class.
As such, I believe both methods of imparting of relevant knowledge should be implemented in both ways. I believe implementations of these 2 methods of of teaching are not mutually exclusive, but one can be used as a supplementary to the other. Online learning can spark aan interest in students, and classroom teaching may be more efficient in knowledge-imparting.
Of course, the abovementioned content is just in my perspective as a student myself, and it may not be true in all cases. Should there be any strong disagreement with anything, please do not hesitate to correct me.

Very insightful Zu Ler *
I actually never thought of the advantage of students' courage to speak up/answer questions.
With every post, we are contributing to the world. I believe once every students in the world become aware of what they really need, evolution will be reach. And about us, we are here, discussing, which is partly making that evolution possible. Keep it up guys!

Hi guys!
WE must admit that there are pros and cons to both of these methods of teaching.
In the conventional classroom, students get to interact more. This is very important since social interaction is very essential in the growth of young people. They get to cooperate with one another in activities. However, there are also disadvantages. Students lose interest in the lessons once it gets very boring. I (and I know most of you guys) have experienced dosing off in class because I tend to get very sleepy once the teachers does the usual lecturing methods. We must also admit that cheating is also prevalent and that we also get distracted inside the classroom.
In online classes, the teacher’s creativity is limitless. As a result, students regain their interest in the lessons. They also get to experience technology first-hand. However, like what Abby said, students tend to divert from the lessons and get distracted once they are in front of the computer. They also cheat by browsing other websites for answers.
I think the best solution to these problems is to integrate both in one teaching method. Our teacher in English has been doing this for a long time now. Sometimes, we have our lessons in the computer lab. He puts the activities in the virtual classroom and we get to answer there too. It has been quite an experience for us students.
Educators should also stop giving activities which make classes look very competitive. This is the reason why students resolve to cheating. Instead, educators should see to it that the students see activities as a way of them to learn on their own. Cheating and distraction could also be eliminated inside online classes by using monitoring and site-filtering softwares.
Online classes could also be very beneficial in reaching places where the nearest decent schools are very inaccessible. However, before this happens, educators should come up with a way that will ensure the efficiency of having classes online.

I think online classes are more suitable for this era. Students these days are more accustomed to net speak since we are so often on the net, and I think it's not entirely inaccurate to say that most students feel more comfortable on online forums than in classrooms.
Also I like online classes (from what I've read, not my personal experience since I've never done an online class) because everything can be logged. In a normal classroom, what the teacher says is often forgotten after some time, whereas if it's an online class, you can play and replay as many times as you want and refer back to the material as many times as you like. Online classes have texts stored in the computer, so we don't have to bring heavy textbooks to and fro school. Online classes is also more environmental friendly because less tree will be cut down for the production of paper.
However, you will need very high discipline to stay focused when having classes online. I think it's a good thing too, so as to train us students to be responsible for our own learning. Online classes are very convenient because everything can be obtained from just one place, i.e the internet.

Hi there Tran!
You have given great points here(they even rhyme). Interaction is really the sole reason why the usual way of learning is still the best way. Distraction, on the other hand, is one of the usual dilemma when it comes to online classes.

Nothing could ever replace the traditional way of teaching which uses the board and chalks and through the innovation of technology the teachers now uses technology like computers and other ICTs, this way of teaching is what I want because I love to be with my classmates talking and chatting during leisure time by that I could not feel lonely and upset..

Hi everyone.
As I have observed in this thread, the pros and cons of online classes vs. conventional classroom lessons have been, at a glance, mentioned, albeit not that comprehensively.(Distraction, spark an interest etc.).
Also, no one seems to have a strong disagreement that it should be implemented both ways, although for some, they have a preference over the other.
That is why, in my opinion, to further expand this thread, we can discuss about HOW we can actually integrate both methods to enhance the effectiveness of a student's learning.
For a start, I have a suggestion in mind. That is to make online lessons into a form of pre-lesson preparation (That is, to have students access the online lessons before the teacher begins the next lesson). I believe it is essential that students have the interest to learn before stepping into a lesson. Since agreed by most that online lessons can allow a student to gain interest, such measure, I believe, can make learning more productive and efficient, because students have interest for classes, and they can clarify any doubts with the teacher encountered during the 'pre-lesson lesson'.
Zu Ler.
P.S
admin, if I have, in any way, violated forum rules because it's a form of digression, please do notify me. I will move this to a new thread if possible.
