Best Way For Students Like Us To Learn Using ICTs
February 4, 2010 - 08:57 AM

Hello Guys!

In your opinion, what do you think would probably be the best way for teachers to properly inculcate the use of ICT's on their students? Do you think the shortest way is always the best way?

Feel free to share your opinions and ideas guys!

Goodluck!

First of all, we know that a lot of students, especially in the third world countries, are quite illiterate when it comes to ICT's. Education about these stuffs is already a must. We should be able to match the fast-flowing advancement of technology or else we'll be lagged behind.

So, I personally think that the best way to teach a student is by interacting with him/her as if you both have the same age. This also applies in teaching how to utilize ICT's. Teachers should understand and consider the type of student they're dealing with. They shouldn't be too fast when they're teaching so that the students may be able to understand what you are talking about. They should also use simple words and give simple instructions(not all students have the same span of vocabulary). They should be able to attend to every student's trouble. Take it step-by-step. Patience is a must.

And also, the shortest way isn't always the best way. In cases like this, taking time would be best. After all, quality is what we aim for.

The best way for me that students like us would learn ICT is through application.

Teachers should integrate the use of ICT in their teaching methods and techniques. I believe that if teachers begin to inculcate technology in the classroom, their productivity would increase.

Visual aids would be made in a fraction of the time when compared to using handwritten materials.

Likewise, we get to have first-hand experience on how ICT helps us in improving our educational standards.

I agree with you Rey! The best way to inculcate (or should we say teach by repeated instruction) is by integrating the ICTs into the educational system. This should be made available to everyone. One problem that we would face, as stated by Kurt, is technology illiteracy. Teaches should equip their students to grow up in an ever-changing world because of technological advancements.

First, make ICT available for all. Without it being available to the majority population, students will not be interested to use ICT, no matter what. That is the role the government plays.

Next is the school. I think the tablet pc program in some of Singapore's future schools is a very good program for students to learn using ICT. Also schools here are all equipped with multimedia equiment, so that teaching by ICT is easily accessible, thus making the process for students to learn using ICT easily ready. Each teacher is given a laptop, so that they can teach students with powerpoint slides, videos and all the other stuff.

Parents also have to support. If there exists some very conservative parents who think that buying their kids computers will only make them addicted to it, then we have to change their mindset so that they become more open to this new idea of the new era.

With the collaboration of all three above mentioned parties, I'm sure students will be able to learn using ICT without much obstruction.

If we want to make ICT available to all, I think the major barrier to making this dream come true is capital.

Sure, we all have the sheer number of people eager enough to try out technology, but we still need the money to get things done.

Fund raising, apart from other schemes (such as sponsorships), I think, would be able to mitigate the needed amount to start an ICT awareness drive/campaign.

By doing so, we let others (and ourselves, as well) learn the advantages of using ICT in education. As a snowball effect, people will be more likely to get drawn to use technology, too!

I know money is a problem, but exactly how big the problem is, I have failed to comprehend, having living in a quite developed country all my life.

That's alright.

If we look at a broader context, in reality, some students haven't even had the chance to touch or see a PC all their lives.

It is therefore a responsibility of those who were fortunate enough to learn using ICT to share the gifts that they have received in one way or another.

Yes, I do realize that there are students who do not know about computers at all. In fact it exists even in my own country, in the rural areas. The government does provide rural schools with computers, but they're just there to collect dust because they do not know how to utilize them. What a waste.

The best way for students to learn the use of ICT is to include Computer Education to the basic education curriculum. Like in the Philippines, Computer Education is not taught in public schools with the basic education curriculum, only the students with the DOST( deparment of Science and Technology) curriculum has computer classes. That's why only few of students from public schools knew how to use computers specially if they don't have one..smile

In Malaysia, we have computer classes from the very primary school, so probably that is why we all know how to use computers, with all the exposure we get.

I think as software and hardware improves exponentionally (such as the new 64 core silicon chips)

Lower grade computers should not stop production because they are making better ones, I mean for a single student or a class 2 - 4 cores would be plenty. Yet they may not even be in production soon because of newer technology. And if we kept them in production for schools thenh the capital would be so low as only for educational use, and then we could incorporate computers and technology earlier, allowing kids to grow up with access to these things and develop the learning with them.

I agree with Arkadian that lower grade computers should still be produced. PCs of decent standard are enough for most kids. They are cheaper and also can be donated by richer families. This is especially true for countries like mine. The government is starting to provide PCs to rural students. However this isn't enough so those who are computer literate should step forward to teach ICT usage. Also only the private schools in this country have computing studies as a compulsory subject. Slowly, all schools should include it in their mandatory syllabus, at least to a certain level.

Another thing that could be done is getting students from private schools/students who can use ICTs to go around various other schools and teach computer usage, etc. Something similar was done at my school some time back and the students enjoyed teaching those of similar age but of different backgrounds.

i Would say "Teaching by MODEL" will be the best way to inculcate the use of ICT on students.

tha vast advancement of Information Communicatio Technology (ICT) has directly and indirectly make it necessity for schools and teachers to incorporate Tech. in learning process.
Schools might be a good platform to INTRODUCE up to date technology, teachers could GUIDE and ASSIST students in utilising them.

in my point of view, teachers should facilitate the learning with touch and use of technology. For instance,
1. the use of microsoft power point and macromedia flash in explaining lesson by some animations and slides could comprehensively describe Science subject to students and fasten their conprehension.
2. Teachers giving some assignments that require power point to present and internet as abundant source of informations.
Teaching by model will be the best way as students could be triggered of.

Everything needs time to be processed. as the time pass by, the students will be get accustomed to ICT.
Fastest way doesnt guarantee the quality. indeed, it needs TIME
