Sexism in movies
April 28, 2004 - 10:01 AM

I am here to see if people relize that movies have a lot of sexism. The girls always have to be slim and the guys are always muscular. The people in most movies that are strong, independent, and dominate are mostly men, and the people who are weak, defenceless and always being saved and mostly the women. My questions are:
1) Do you think there is more sexist stereotyping in today's movies than in movies in the 1950's?
2)What do they represent in the movies?
3) Do you think that the men and women are liked because of their looks or their acting mostly?

I think that you're right about how the media stereotypes differnt types of people, but I think that it's also what people want to see. Many people are judged because of their culture or religion and I think that a part of our culture in this generation is a sense of sexism. Others will judge you because your a female or male, but it's up to you to react in the same way, respectfully or disrespectfully.

Well, I believe that the sexism in movies have improved, but there is still sexism in movies.
I believe they represent a negative influence to viewers.
Well, of course men and women are liked because of their looks. Looks give people first impressions, but then the way they act are too. It's just looks seem to be more powerful.

Funny you should mention old movies. I have watched several old Carry Grant films lately and they all seem to have a similar theme towards women. Grant doesn't beat up on them but he does yell quite a bit and pushes them around. This isn't accepted these days, but things have changed. Now the women still have to be sexy but they are also more independent from men. More not completely.
A good example of an actress liked for her looks not her ability: Jennifer Aniston. Every time I see her in a movie or on Friends on tv she's always just Jennifer Aniston. A counter to this would be Uma Thurmon. She was great in Le Miserables! And a male example: Keanu Reeves. He's come a long way from Bill and Ted's but still needs work.
