Film Festival Fiesta!!!
April 22, 2004 - 01:20 AM

Hey, I'm working on a toolkit to help young people make their own movies and start their own film festivals. I have worked on film festivals beofre, one cool one that was run by me and a bunch of other kids, and one gross one run by adults who thought they knew what we wanted better than we did ourselves. Both taught me that you've got to not only ask people what they want, but listen to them too.
I'm wondering if any of you have any ideas about what YOU would need to get a film festival started in your community, and what you would need to make your own movie. Any replies will get full credit in the toolkit, which will be shared internationally through TIG.
Thank you all for your help and advice!

I'm really interested starting a film festival in my community. I live in Canada too, in British Columbia and I've made a few movies before. I've gone to this film camp for the past two summers and made short movies.
I'm still in high school right now but when I graduate, I want to go into film studies. I would be extremely interested in getting involved with starting a festival up. Thanks so much for your post, I look forward to you reply.

Hey Emily, sorry it took so long to get back to you.
I think it's great that you want to start a film festival. I think I've talked to your film camp before, they seem like a really great resource. If you need any advice, feel free to ask. I'd like to know about any of the setbacks or helpful things you encounter as you try to get it off the ground. Who's been helpful, who have you learned to avoid? What ways have you learned to get in touch with other like-minded young people? I'm interested to know how your experiences are similar or different from mine, so that the toolkit can be more useful to other people.
Whaddaya think? Does anyone else have any ideas or expereinces to share?

I'm talking about the Gulf Island Film and Television School. That's where I've made some films and I find that I meet some really great kids there who are really into film, and I think it's really great!
I'd love to see the draft of the toolkit ... you can e-mail it to me if you'd like or whatever!
For the festival, I'd love to organize one in my community for the summer. I think I can find a good location (at the arts centre in my town) and I need help for promotion ideas and I'm not sure how to get people to submit work and everything. I don't really have much money to spend at all ... any ideas? Thanks!!

Hey guys - just thought I would drop in my 2 cents - I went to NYU film - Graduated three years ago and now work in Hollywood turning Marvel comic characters into features.
You have to make a decision as to if movie making is a hobby or a life goal - because to do it right requires 1 thing - passion.
Don't let anyone tell you what is possible - I hooked an actor to rock climbing gear and suspende him from the Empire State Building (pre 9/11) for my Thesis film - you can talk people into anything if you have vision passion and a firm grasp of what you are doing.
Anyway - I gatta go to sleep - but the other thing to remember - keep it short - don't get so in love with every little nuance of your project that you are attatched to everything and the movies twice as long as it should be - you must be your own harshest critic - you must be merciless on your own material. And if your friends are good friends - they won't just smile and say "its really good" - they will tell you where you went wrong - you should screen for friends before locking picture and before you show it to strangers.

Hey Luke, thanks for your comments. I think your suggestion to keep it short and cut the movie down was a particularly good one. Actually, everything you said was really good advice.
Emily and Vladimir, I'll send you both copies of the toolkit as soon as I figure out the technical side of things.
Whooeeeeeee!

Well, as far as sponsorship goes, every festival I have been involved with did have some type of sponsorship. One was sponsored by a high school, and by donations from businesses. The other, which was much bigger, had many corporate sponsors, but becaise of that the filmmakers did not have as much control over how the festival was run.
I would suggest that you ask around to local businesses, and research any government programs or NGO's taht have funding to support young artists.
We may have mentioned the (hopefully) upcoming database of independant vidoes that TIG will be supporting. I know that the Prelinger archives are providing a huge amount of support. You may want to check out their website at http://www.archive.org/movies/prelinger.php to see what they're all about.

I am very glad to hear that among our fellow members have such wonderful plan of movie making and organizing film festivals in our communities.
Iam one among the peole who like film making but the problem is that here you can fulfill such programmes because of the lack of the knowledge of the film making and the lack of fund as well.
I hope in ytour kit i will have such wonderfull plans on how to fulfill the dream of being a young film maker.

Thank you for quick answer to forum. Very bad, that you not to write me on electronic box. On forum I am not so often so more possibility I have only in weekend.
I so understand that this project will have a sponsors. But these sponsors will render aid for inhabitant Canada only. This signifies that I must by itself concern with searching for sponsors in my country. I it is correct to think? If this it is correct, that I think that I shall have only 1 percent chance. I think that my small city will not be capable to render me help in work on film. I know this! In my city each year to pass the contest on the best young groups and appearances. Many young people to have very good appearance, have an грамоты and prizes. But for want of sponsor they cannot show their skill and talent in the other city and country. This much sadness. If I am ask the help, that little who will turn attention on me. This therefore that I have an no experience in work on films and nobody not will give their own money in unprofitable project.
Certainly, much well was have a film festival in its country, but then have a show film festival in the general country that many people could see work other people. Will this possible?
When plan to begin work?
How many countries to want to take part in this work?
Respectfully yours,
Vladimir.

Hello! How are you?
I think that festival art much well idea! I know this!
But you also, either as I, have not determined son-in-laws in fabrication film. Also you has a no help and good equipment, either as many others. Exactly so I want to search for the sponsors, who will help to do our projects more qualitative and that they have its beginning. Otherwise, when we shall have only ideas and thoughts in our heads they are simply disappeared, as well as not entailment on the video.
Sincerely,
Vladimir.

Hi,
I am interested in the Toolkit aswell. But what has been the general inputs from the early recipients of the toolkit, How has it been beneficial?
I am looking to developing young people in Nigeria with a vision to capturing and helping the ever growing nollywood the Nigerian Film industry. I am of the opinion that the sector lack creativity and professionalism. Lots of young men and women have one way or the other avoided the desire to help develop this verile sector because they lack the passion, opportunities, equipment and interest since they have not been exposed to this filming and acting as they see it as an herculean task.
Most of the people in my country have made it into a contract and 'cult'u either know someone that belong or u don't belong....then how can ths develop?
I am open to suggestions on how to catch them young and get little future leaders to develop interest in this sector and to help them collarborate and make a living out of it.
