What part of school do you want to change for the greater good of the students and teachers alike? (It could be social, environmental, religious, etc issues)

Hopefully, our voices will get heard.

In my case, I want to voice out the attitude of a lot of students regarding waste, waste segregation and the likes. How can we start saving the environment when we can't even discipline ourselves? In our school, every time we have programs, seminars and symposiums, even if the MC's announce that we should not leave our trash around, a lot of people still leave their trash around. Its rather sad, knowing that our city was partly flooded due to our lack of waste segregation. I hope, through this forum, we could help others realize the dangers they are doing to the economy.

How 'bout you guys?

With the current problems of our school, I want to change the social interaction of teachers to students. The gap between them seems so far..

In our school, i think it would help if the material aspects of our learning environment would be improved, not only by providing necessary facilities, equipments or materials but also infusing our modern technology :-)

Personally, I think the waste problem is not just concentrated in our schools. It is a national, if not global, perennial headache. It kind of leans to lack of discipline. You see it everywhere, at the market, community halls, parks, etc.

Anyway, if there's one thing I'd like to change about my school, it would be communication (or rather appropriately, the lack thereof). There should be synergy between the students and the administration. The students after all, should have participation in policy-making bodies whose eventual rules will directly affect them.

Also, i would like to instill ENVRONMENTAL CARE. I would like to improve on the students' and teachers' awareness regarding so many environmental issues and their willingness to stand up and take action even by just simply following school policies regarding the environment like waste segregation and proper waste disposal.

I agree with this to a certain aspect, The way students veiw teachers and vice versa isn't strong enough for teachers to be able to create and fuel passion about education. Teachers who can connect to students and produce good results are usually those who can connect to them on their level and allow the students to do the same to them. So this issue would be something i would like to change in my school.

We share the same sentiments. Honestly speaking, I would rather have a simple, clean and mundane Earth rather than having a lot of Wall-E's running around the planet. Before we start advancing into technology, we must first heed the whims of our endangered planet.

I certainly agree. But sometimes, in our case, certain teachers tend to talk too much about their lives and other what-nots that there is not enough time for the lessons already. Sometimes, teachers should try different approaches and strategies to catch their student's attention. I appreciate our English teacher for making new ways and activities for students to participate in the discussion. However, students should also participate in these activities and not slack off.

I think since we are talking about school, we should focus on the reforms regarding education itself. Educators should leave their conventional ways and go find new and creative ones. By doing this, students will regain their interest in their studies and teachers won’t have a hard time making their students grasp the lessons. Once this goes on to a large scale, it could also resolve the problem on the drops in literacy rates.

Another thing that the governments should consider is the lack of teachers. Here in the Philippines, teachers get lower pays as compared to other professions. Because of this, fewer students are considering careers in education. It is once said that teaching is the noblest profession. Why then are teachers being disregarded? Governments should make reforms that will encourage more students to take up teaching.

Come to think about it, racial discrimination is also prominent in schools. WE have to understand what students belonging to minorities feel. Bullying is one major problem that most students encounter in school. In most cases, the major cause is discrimination. Students who are bullied lose interest in their studies and sometimes drop out of school because of embarrassment. I think we should resolve this problem immediately if we want equal education opportunity for every global citizen.

In our school, I'd like to change the problem of limited materials for teaching and the teacher-student gap. They really affect the ability of students to have the desire to learn.

True, true. A big minus, socially, is bullying. Not only racial/ethnic discrimination but also religious discrimination (if that's the term). Muslims sometimes get "discriminated" or marginalized. Sometimes. Bullying decreases the students' inclination to learn. We must remove this barrier and let other students learn their wrongs and correct them.

Teacher quality

Don't we all have a favorite teacher?

I believe good teachers who know how to teach well and connect with students are very important. Too often we see teachers who know the content and course well, but don't bring their knowledge across to students. I assume you all know what i'm talking about. We all know a few very intelligent teachers who mumble or speak in monotone or who just make the subject really boring. This is not necessarily the teachers fault. I believe one thing the government/schools can do is offer support or training to teach teachers to improve on their teaching methods. A good engaging teacher can dramatically improve the marks of students, even underperforming ones. Better performance, grades and self esteem of the student are not the only things that can benefit. Better teachers may decrease the drop out rate of teenagers, potentially decreasing crime rates and increasing university admissions.

Environmentally Sustainable

If we at an early age educate students about environmental issues as well as surround them in an environmentally sustainable school environment, they will be able to experience the teachings inside the classroom. New schools being built should be assessed in terms of energy efficiency, recycling and sustainablilty. Current school buildings could do with some fitted solar panels, a rainwater tank, more open spaces for ventilation etc. This allows students to grow up more environmentally conscious and hopefully enables them to become a greener future generation. big grin

I would like to change the students' attitude towards uniform, attire and appearance. They think short skirts, short socks, long fringes and what not are cool, but I think they're not suitable for students like us. Students are supposed to look neat and presentable. It's not our job to go after fashion, to beauty ourselves up each day just to go to school. We should be more focused on studying, instead of being intent to look cool.

Mmm this is hard! Its almost like only choosing one of the unfortunate many things we could all improve at school.

However, if it was possible I'd like to change all the stereostypical views we have towards eachother. For example, there's the Jocks, the Sluts (Excuse me for such 'bad' language), the Nerds, the Achievers, the Druggies and all the endless sub-groups. But if you really think about it, why are we termed these things in the first place? Sure we all have our different interests and like-minded people automatically connect (I mean what are we all doing here for? Wonder what this would make us? Haha)
Back to the point- Maybe it's because in general, people only stick to who they know and will socialise with.

So what I'm saying is I'd like to challenge the comfort zones of everyones connections. Encourage them to willingly befriend themselves to peers. Hopefully this will spread peace when the positive, outgoing, contagious attitudes spread as well. Which I'm sure studies show that it does.

It's almost like a non- cheesy version of High School Musical. stunned
...Now I'm just thinking on HOW to encourage the student body. If anyone has got any suggestions please share?

I think I'm very lucky because where I live, there doesn't really exist the stereotype and cliques in school. There is a little when we were in primary school, but after we became older, it all just stopped.
