Deception Station
April 13, 2004 - 11:29 AM

"C'est pour ça on te dis que 1er gaou n'est pas gaou O ..."
That song's stuck in my head.
I'm singing it on the motocycle on the way home.
Finally, w'er here.
Open the door...There's a package on my table.
Label reads:"Office of Admissions, Berea College..."
I know exactly what's inside.
A yellow note is stuck to the envelope.
I can hear my heart thumbing.
Let's take a closer look at the note.
"Linda, I'm extremely sorry ...Daddy"
It doesn't say that ! I didn't see that word !
I could swear I didn't see it.
Let's look again.
"Linda, I'm extremely sorry it did not work for Berea College. There may be other options."
Huh ! I'm sure it's a joke. Daddy is probably trying to play a trick on me.
Let's look in the envelope.
It's already open. Well, let's see inside.
I unfold the letter.
I read:
"Dear Linda S. Adzanku"
"... Thank you for your interest in Berea College"
That's a good sign. Isn't it? Read on.
"...I am sorry, the admission committee ...Best regards."
no!
I'm probably seeing things. Let's read again.
"...sorry...this academic year, only five percent(30 students) of our admissions are international ..."
A lump is growing in my throat.
I have to get rid of it before it chokes me.
I go to my room.
Shred the letter into a thousand pieces, whishing it was the admission committee I was shredding.
That only stopped the lump from growing for a short while. Then it started again.
I lay on my bed, face up, pillow on my face, random tears stream across my cheeks, past my ears, and soak the bed sheets.
I think:
My first academic deception.
All my life, I managed to stay ahead of most of my classmates (among the best).
Never been below average or simply average.
I've always been a school idol, admired even by principals.
What did those 30 admitted people have more than I?
Linda, stop it. You'r being ostentatious.
Maybe I am.
Someone's knocking.
Come in !
It's miss Florence, the cook. (a healthy woman in her 40s)
She asks : « What?s wrong ? »
Nothing !
« Sir has already told me what happened »
I think : so why are you asking me ?
« You know, this dosen't mean it's the end. You don't know what God has in store for you. The Bible tells us that He no evil thought conserning His people. All things happen for the good of God's people. You don't konw why God is not sending you to this school. You must have patience upon the Lord because His time is not our time. We humans want to run faster than God and we often end up falling. Take it easy.»
I thingk : God, why do you send the woman I despise most in this world, to tell me all these things ?
She walks out.
She's right though. And plus, Berea wasn't my only option. I applied to 4 colleges in total.
But still.
I've got to do better! I have to so my best!
I will tolerate no more deceptions!
Finnal exams are in 3 weeks.
I must do my best.
I must must must!
I can't stand the feeling of being dropped out.
It's not too late.
I still get to decide how I want this exam to be for me.
Funny, the lump is gone.

About the school thing keep this in mind. College is what you put into it not so much the school itself. I learned more in my personal readings in college that I did in class a lot of the time. I know presitgious schools can provide connections and look good to employers but the true value of school is growth and learning. Go where you can do these things.

The main reasons why i realy wanted to go to Berea College are the following:

*You pay your the $21.ooo annual tuition by yourself, through working for the college.
* you get good quality 4 year labour experience, which makes employment easier upon graduation.
* The majority of Berea students graduate debt free.(acording to the Brochures)

I thought if i got admitted, after college, I could get some real good paying job and work for a couple of years before going to university.

Now that I know I'm not admitted, I guess I'll just have to do with an ok paying job before grad school.

The funny thing is, I was on the college site a couple of days ago and I suscribed to the alumni discussion board just to interact with some of them and have a second had idea about live on campus. To my surprise, nobody has updated that board for ages. The most recent message was 2 years old. Then I thought, if they realy like it there, then why did they so neglect keeping in touch? Or maybe they have another discussion board? Or they are just too busy to discuss. I did a research at yahoo groups and I eventually found a Berea college alumni discussion board. There I got a second surprise: it was disclaimed by the institute. I suscribed to see their messages and I noticed that all the messages there were from the group manager and nobody ever commented. I went to the other colleges' website and yahoo groups ( the other options), just to find out if this e-interaction negligance wasn't a college attitude. It wasn't. All the discussion board of the other colleges were lively and active.

I figured, if i did get accepted at Berea, eigther I would get so worked out that I wouldn't find time even to post messages on a lonely discussion board, or I would hate it so much that I wouldn't even think of interacting with anybody from there, online.
I would probably be much more relaxed in one of the other colleges.

Considering the hypothesis, not going to Berea isn't bad at all.

Well there you have it! With your level of determination and spirit I'm sure you will succeed in what ever you do. Actually, here's what I managed out of my college situation. I took a few classes at community college (some english, computer, journalism and other classes) and then majored in English because I have something of a writing talent...poetry namely. While I started my upper level studies at university (Florida State), I got a job working with computers. By the time I graduated I had three computer support positions under my belt and actually stayed in the computer field...without a computer degree! That's what I mean when I say you make your own opportunities. Either that or fortune just seeks you out...

Actually I don't have a clue. I started in community college which here doesn't require SAT or ACT. I graduated from cc and went to university. In most US states if you grad. from cc, you can enter university no questions asked as long as your gpa is ok. I played it smart huh? Actually I liked community college. Mine was way more diverse than Florida State and had "real" common people instead of a bunch of fraternity/sorority people. And it was WAY cheaper...

yeah Brian, u sure did play it smart. It saved u a lot of trauma.

Udara,it depends on which institution u are interested in. Some colleges request a minimum combined score of 600, while others request a minimum 400 in math and 500 in verbal.
I think lots of prestigeous colleges ask for a minimum of 550 on both math and verbal.
This information is valid, only for SAT I.

Hello! Seyram,

Yeah, That’s mentioned in most of their web sites So I guess the students seek around 600.

It’s a bit tougher here; most students have to score around 650 and 700 for both Maths and Verbal. When I first did a mock exam on SAT 1, I got 450 for verbal and 700 for Maths. Believe me, I was quite shocked smile Then I concentrated more on verbal for 3 months which gave me 700 mark for the Verbal but I lost 50 of my first 700 for maths sadsadsad So I am still 50 runs short of 1400 sadsad I might as well as try again this year as well.

Hi! Brian,

Even I heard the community colleges are fine but not sure for an international student like Seyram as she might face VISA problems.

Most of the Asian students try for Singapore universities too, Anybody here from NUS????

Cheers,

Udara
