How wired is your workplace?
April 18, 2001 - 01:21 AM

I know that at my job (I sell computers) the Internet and other technologies play a big role. I honestly have no idea what I'd do if I wasn't able to help answer a customer's question by going on the HP website and finding a spec on a computer. Every time a customer comes in looking for a rebate I can just go online and get it from our FTP or from the manufacturer website.

Rather than running to a phone terminal every time a customer calls in, the salesmen get cordless headsets which we just turn on and start talking. That way we don't have to put the customer on hold when we check if something's in stock.

How does your job compare?

As i am currently totally and utterly unemployed, i will only speak of the place i last worked at... one of five restaurants of the same name in Toronto...

Now, one would not usually expect a restaurant to be particularly *wired* but i do... and the vice-president of this group of five restaurants thought so too... and spent several thousand dollars having a website developed for the company.

Unfortunately, they hired a not-too-competent person to do the website... and what they ended up with is so useless that the company has essentially abandoned the website, in favour of an expensive, and no better, alternative.

The resulting webpage is found here: http://www.picklebarrel.on.ca

user-unfriendly, unintegrated, and in general, sloppy.

ah well

i don't care that much anyway... they fired me, or, i think they did, but they haven't told me... but that's a story for another day!

Regardless of how wired the workplace is you need the wired workers to do the job. There is a divide in the workplace and the gap is getting better with the new generation coming into the workforce.
Those who are in the know will have a job and those who don't won't be getting a secretary to do their typing and risk losing their job.
