What do you think about your local government contributions to the realization of MDGs?

Government, as the most powerful actor of the country, must have played a crucial role in controlling a country.
So does with the realization of the MDGs. Government, is surely potrays an important role in socializing and turn that goals into reality.
And what about the government in your country?
What have they done?
What do you think is still lacking from them?
What's your solutions?
Please feel free to write about your ideas!

actually, It's not a good idea to say anything about government in my country (Vietnam). They don't give us the full-right-of speech.
Anyway, they're great here in Vietnam. Although you can't criticize them, you can get a very peaceful life, with thought any political argument.

I think we can speak about these issues. It is not very strict though.
1. What have they done?
As winds of change are blowing over countries with ICT, every government sees the need. In my country - Vietnam, over the past 4 years, Informatics has become a official subject since secondary schools. Additionally, quite a few universities already have departments of ICT. And what really great is that we have competitions about robotics, programming, innovative tech,v.v... all year round, and it's a great incentive for the youth to be creative and productive.
2. Lack:
Personally I think we are currently lacking in the following things:
- Personnel (esp. the youth, in the field of ICT)
- New technologies and devices (some schools' computer system is even 7-to-10-year-old)
- The very problem of funding
- Synchronization in distributing tech resources.
3. Solution:
No immediate solution would work in this concern. What we need is something for the long run, I suppose. Something like developing the innovative new generation (wow, it's big?!), provide ICT tools to disadvantaged people.

Despite everything that's happening here in the Philippines, I still believe that the government is playing it's role but not everyone benefits from it.
The different departments of our government has their own programs but some of them are not implemented. why? because some politicians are very greedy. For example, our department of education, which has the biggest budget, builds schools, reaches out to remote areas, etc. they also encourage students to help in the environment.
I think they lack ideas..they always follow the tradition..i'm not against it but it's better if they have alternatives like having online classrooms, etc.
The government should think it over..and hopefully, in the next election, the new president will have a more REAL program for the Philippines

I cannot say that our government has done little in contributing to the realization of the MDGs. Our government has been making projects which can be considered to be helpful in this matter. However, our government’s effort is not fully felt by the people because it is always overshadowed by scandals. People are being pessimistic to the government because of this. They are always seeing fault in every move that the government takes. We cannot blame the people on their attitude because it is true that some are not benefiting from these projects. The efficiency of the projects is lessened because not all of the funds for the projects are utilized. Like what Khristine said, some funds go straight to the pockets of some of our politicians. As a result, the people are already losing their trust. To change the viewpoint of these people, a reform in the government should be made immediately.

I think in New Zealand there are many initiatives occuring, However the extreme Bureaucracy that we have in our government, both at a local and national level is what currently stops these initiatives from occuring.
For a change to be initiated it is currently taking years, often involving law changes to allow things to come into action etc. For major change to occur in the teaching methods of today, alot of funding needs to occur to re-design classes to handle more technology, as well as for teacchers to make a change to the new technology.
Hopefully this will change in the next couple of years though, as we look to streamline systems.

As im from the same country this basically hit the nail on the head.
Aswell as the fact we have constant cultural challanges stopping almost anything that does pass through the long process, And as we are only a small nation, even with our positive attitudes, only little is achieved. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Regards ArKadian.

Thats a brilliant point Jonathan, I think it is almost a case of 'being the victims of our own success' in a way. Because we are such a free speaking country, where everyone has an opinion, where everyone else hears that opinion of everyone else.
Because of this, consultation processes and our constant fight to make everyone happy places a huge strain on those trying to make changes.
Im interested to see your thoughts on how we can change our country to have more positive change, particularly in the education sector, as well as other sectors.
Personally, I think that we need to steamline government consultation processes (Im personally not 100% sure how to do this, while still retaining peoples full ability to be heard.) To increase communication between schools and to give them more power to change their systems.

My local government is in the process of a thorough planning of how to spread use of technology. Our current government has taken up the materialization of 'Digital Bangladesh'. It sounds sort of silly but they plan to add technology to a greater extent in many places in society.
Two of its latest plans which are being worked on are - supplying a ICT based education to rural areas, and 'digitalizing' bus transport.
Computers are being provided throughout rural schools. In places where this has been accomplished to decent extent, every villager is near a computer and internet facilities.
BTravel in my country runs on a different system than in perhaps most nations. More than ten years ago, to travel by bus in Scotland meant having an ID and purchasing tickets inside the bus. In my country, passengers need to buy their tickets from assigned staff. In the near future, this will be done via a machine and intervention from people will not be necessary to maintain its performance.
